F3ynman's Checklist

Here are albums (ordered by subgenre) that I want to listen to, but haven't yet.
For some albums, I've heard one or two songs, but not the entire album. Therefore, these albums still await my judgement!
Recommendations are always welcome!

I'm dreading the moment you'll listen to Encenathrakh, ...

haha yeah, sorry, mate, but this is way too much stuff going on. I need music that balances sound with silence. Ah, well. Sorry for my soft ears . Was that the extreme end of brutal DM?

Edit: listening to Arcturus - The Sham Mirrors right now. This is pretty nice
Edit 2: Maudlin Of The Well - Bath is mixed for me. Some moments that I like, others that I don't. (My typical reaction to prog, I guess )

That's pretty much as chaotic and crazy as BDM gets, there are some other bands doing similar stuff that I also really like such as Trichomoniasis or Effluence but Encenathrakh really are the cornerstone of that new wave of BDM. Defeated Sanity's last album also went in that direction but it's a little more conventional than the non-stop onslaught for the ears that Encenathrakh play

The Sham Mirrors is such an incredibly fun album, I'm glad you liked it! Garm's vocals are soooo good and the whole album really manages to create an oddly cold atmosphere
As for MotW, I also have mixed feelings on that album. It's definitely wayyy too meandering and loses my attention very frequently. The highs it can reach are really great but for the most part this is an album I rarely come back to. I think Leaving Your Body Map (which is a complementary listen to this, both albums released together) is a little better but overall I think I like the debut even more, although I rarely ever come back to them

3. Urfaust - Geist Ist Teufel (or the compilation Ritual Music For The True Clochard, which isn't in your list but captures the band and their atmosphere perfectly)

Awesome recommendation, man! I found Geist Ist Teufel quite intriguing, and now I'm rockin' along to that compilation! I'm lovin' it

That compilation is IMO where they perfected their sound and their songwriting. There are very few black metal records that can hold a candle to it. Geist Ist Teufel is a great album and the rest of their discography is full of bangers, but that compilation is just something else

Is it a rerecording or remastering of older songs, or just a straight-up collection of the old songs?

About half of that comp is taken from "Verräterischer, Nichtswürdiger Geist", and I'm pretty sure those tracks are remastered. The other half are taken from various splits Urfaust did over the years and I think those tracks are untouched, but I might be wrong!

6. Verdunkeln - Einblick In Den Qualenfall (just an all around great album)

Another great recommendation, thanks!
It seems that we mostly see eye-to-eye on black metal (except if it veers too far into noise, like La Torture Des Ténèbres )

La Torture Des Ténèbres is a very special case, I'm sure there's a lot of rawer black metal you'd enjoy. From this year for example I'd recommend the new Nimbifer album!

Bro you have some truly great stuff sitting in that list, my picks would be:
1. Albino Slug - Barabbas (because you liked the debut and I'm still the only vote on this EP)
2. Arkheth - 12 Winter Moons Comes The Witches Brew (I am simply in love with this album)
3. Urfaust - Geist Ist Teufel (or the compilation Ritual Music For The True Clochard, which isn't in your list but captures the band and their atmosphere perfectly)
4. Arcturus - The Sham Mirrors (one of my gateways into weirdo metal and I still love it to this day)
5. Esoteric - Metamorphogenesis (because you clearly need to give them a second chance and this album is great for that)
6. Verdunkeln - Einblick In Den Qualenfall (just an all around great album)
7. Encenathrakh - Ithate Thngth Oceate (I'm not even sure I'd recommend this album to anyone but it's awesome if you're mentally prepared for it)
8. Maudlin Of The Well - Bath (I'm not the biggest MotW fan anymore but this album was a cornerstone of my metal journey and there's a lot to love about it)
I could make a list twice as long as this one but I think those are good picks for what to listen to in priority

I've worked my way through your recommendations. My favorites were Urfaust, Esoteric, and Verdunkeln. Thanks!

Do you mind pointing out other albums you see in this list that I should prioritize?

Holy.. Well to my taste, you should tackle these, because they are some of my favourites from this list.

1. Kylesa - Spiral Shadow
2. Black Tusk - Taste The Sin
3. Cautiva - Human
4. Anacrusis - Screams And Whispers
5. Cult Of Luna - A Dawn To Fear
6. Demolition Hammer - Epidemic Of Violence

There would be others in there but thats a good start and some excellent albums IMO.

I've worked my way through your recommendations. I liked Kylesa and Cult Of Luna best.

Do you mind pointing out any other albums in this list that I should prioritize?

The real essentials I see in the list would be:
Ulver - Nattens Madrigal (an all time favourite of mine, possibly the best that raw bm has to offer)
Timeghoul - Discography (some of the most inventive and unique dm ever made, incredibly forward thinking for the 90s)
Master's Hammer - Ritual (the missing link between first and second wave bm, very catchy riffs and melodies while keeping that cold atmosphere)
Arizmenda - Stillbirth In The Temple Of Venus (very original, trippy and hypnotic bm)
Chapel Of Disease - Very long album name (another very original dm release)

Beyond that, I would recommend the Mastery, Gehenna, Mordor, Leviathan and Gris releases in your list the most, although none of them I would really consider essential, but they're still great!

Side note: I had no idea that the albino slug vocalist made a guest appearance on that Manes album! The album itself is very hit or miss and I'd actually recommend their debut as an essential second wave Norwegian bm release, but that anecdote is so cool!

Thanks a ton for the recommendations! And yeah, I think I just was looking at what else the musicians of Albino Slug were credited with and found that. Have no idea what it sounds like yet, but I'll listen to it soon and also check out their debut

Thanks! Together, you and Doez cover almost the whole metal spectrum (at least, on the extreme metal side): Doez focuses more on black and avant-garde while you focus more on thrash and sludge. You both seem to overlap at death and doom
