1990 is a year to be remembered in the history of heavy metal. And it has to be said that the US Megadeth have made a lot for it with the launch of their cataclysmic opus, Rust In Peace. After three albums of good quality the four guys decided to release a (nuclear) bomb that has become a landmark in the metal world.
Dave Mustaine publicly reveals his genius, accompanied by his old mate Dave Ellefson. For this album, Mustaine has hired a new guitarist, Marty Friedman, and a drummer, Nick Menza. The first impression when you hear this album, is its pure, almost uncontrolled strength, that changes every riff into an earthquake. The guitars are omnipresent, they rhythm, without any moment of weakness, the lyrics, resolutely anti military and full of nuclear apocalypse. In this point of view, the excellent ?Holy wars? is a titanic opening. This track can be considered as a symbol of all the rage and determination that the album contains, as it combines heavy repeating riffs and guitar flights. This only track can justify the purchase of this album. Because it's a boost that allows the other tracks to be linked together with a great fluidity.

The year is 1990, and the 80's thrash scene will soon fade into the backdrop. There seems to be no hope for this genre beyond but a few bands, but only one of these bands was needed; Megadeth. Since the last album, Dave have ousted Chuck Behler and Jeff Young, and replaced them with Nick Menza and Guitar Giant Marty Friedman. With Political and Societal themes ready to launch, Megadeth was ready to make their fans Rust in Peace.

Exactly 30 years ago, on September 24th, Rust In Peace was unleashed upon the world and had the impact of an atomic bomb. Just before thrash metal's demise, Megadeth released a magnificent masterpiece that was at the same time so aggressive yet dexterous, so catchy yet progressive, so melodic yet gritty, that it would be considered groundbreaking even if it was released today. Alongside the two Daves, Rust in Peace was the first Megadeth album to feature lead guitarist Marty Friedman and the late Nick Menza on drums, thus undoubtedly forming the most talented line-up the band ever had. Titles like "Holy Wars... The Punishment Due", "Hangar 18", and "Tornado Of Souls" are carved with golden letters on the Book of Thrash's Legendary Tracks. To be consumed incessantly and irresponsibly until nuclear warfare wipes us off the face of this planet.

FFS, Rust In Peace is thrash. No doubt about that. The rffing, drumming, soloing all constitute to it being thrash.

Yeah, agreed. The riffing is just so fast and technical that it doesn't have that Slayer-esque sound which usually defines thrash.

Another cd to burn out my stereo... i hate the remix album but still own the tape ... sadly seems it wasn't fit for better mixing ... but my opinion

I own both the remix/remaster and the original album and I agree with you. The original is vastly superior to the remix/remaster.

Even though it is still one of my all-time favourite thrash albums (althought there are some nimwits here on MS who say it is not thrash )

Hmmmm. I wouldn't go as far as "pure thrash" but it's got some thrashy elements to it. Imo this is almost an early bridge between metal and like a progressive death metal. There are some really slick time changes going on throughout and it never really lets up. It's more than metal and it's not quite thrash. When I think thrash I immediately think of Nuclear Assault's Game Over, Stormtroopers of Death, earlier Slayer up to and including Reign in Blood. Megadeth's Peace Sells is pretty much thrash, but Rust in Peace crosses a boundry somewhere between metal, thrash, power, and progressive concepts. We could just forgo the 15 adjectives needed to describe it (and the rest) and just call it metal...

Hey, men of Progressive Death Metal, I know everyone has his opinion but this is real thrash metal men, i wouldn't call progressive death metal even to a possible future heavy metal album of Megadeth! Men, that's is deny the existence of Thrash metal in my opinion... That's one of the best peace of work i've ever heard of metal men, and i've really heard excelent music like many headbangers men! Heavy Metal rules men!

One of the greatest metal albums ever made. All songs on this CD are masterpieces. And Megadeths finest lineup also imo.

Agreed. I also grew up with the band having that lineup, which is another reason I have a lot of affection for it. Dave should never have fired Nick, he was an amazing drummer.

Ok trolls, don't get pissed but I think Peace Sells AND So Far are much better than this release. Not sure what all the hub-bub is about. A top album of all-time? Not even close...Does anyone else feel this album is a bit overrated?

I do find it a good album but find Peace Sells way better because of the raw edge to it. Here Megadeth already started to sound too produced and slick.
So far is only better with one side of the album. What puts So far down for me is the terrible cover of Anarchy In The UK.

Agreed Marcel. Peace Sells feels more "heavier" - if you get my meaning - the production on Rust feels too "processed", too overdone...

Exactly, it misses that rough biting edge which is peresent on Peace Sells. There Dave still sounds really angry. And also the instrumentation is less slick.

Well, obviously this does not have as much of a bite as Peace Sells, but in my opinion that is what makes THIS album so great, compared to hundreds of other great "raw" thrash albums. I mean I wouldn't want to listen to this all the time, but the slick production, and the bigger focus on technicality and complexity than on rawness and speed is what makes this such a great album IMO. I mean, there were a lot of great thrash bands in the 80's obviously, but it seems to me that only ONE band reallllly had the firepower to write and perform stuff like Hangar 18, Lucretia, or Tornado of Souls. I mean, in my opinion, this is a one of a kind album. I realize that none of this means that it is necessarily a GOOD album, but that is up to the listener. I am simply saying of course this doesn't have the raw bite as hundreds of other thrash records, BUT it's not supposed to either.

Mostly vote abuse, although one or two of those people probably think it's a piece of shit.

I think it's one of Megadeth's best albums and I wouldn't give it more than a 7.
