Risk is crap. Here it is, I won't have to say it again. Dave Mustaine's jealousy of Metallica's succe$$ has blinded him. He has completely gone astray in his quest for radio broadcasting.
We all knew that the times of Megadeth playing speed-thrash were over since Countdown to Extinction, but hell, Youthanasia was a very good heavy metal album and Cryptic Writings contained great moments. Megadeth used to belong to the Big Four of Thrash, they don't have the right to release such a soup. You can expect that kind of album from a glam-rock band, but not from guys that have dominated metal genres all over the 90's.

In the liner notes of Risk, Mustaine claims that had this album been released with some other band's name on it, it would have been a success; yeah, that's not really the case. The same album by another name would be just as bad.

While not the worst thing Megadeth would put out, it isn't that far away from being so. While the change of direction isn't great, what gives this album its reputation is that most songs are just boring. If you want one song to sum up what's wrong with this record, then give "The Doctor Is Calling" a spin, a plodding meandering track that goes nowhere slow. This is a recurring theme for most of the album; "Prince of Darkness" mis-steps while trying to be atmospheric and comes off as cheesy and boring, before eventually picking up the pace. "Wanderlust" does have a good chorus and ends on a high note, but it feels like a chore to hang in there to get to that point.

A bad album from a bad era of Megadeth...But Megadeth's bad era is still much better than the bad era of Metallica

For me the best Megadeth album...not for stupid metal heads. As always...something musical good without noise is bad:) The same is with 'load' and 'reload' from Metallica - their best albums but stupid metal heads prefer the same guitar boring things all the time?

I dunno why the album is so low on rating...???Yes, Mustaine wanted to sell out and he wanted a no. 1 seller album but wat the hell has that got to do with the music?? The music is Great . sure, its not that fast thrash Megadeth but it it still has some great songwriting, great solos, and hell, the vocals are top notch in this album. For the lyrics, Mustaine gave up his political statements for a while and tried some things more personal. All the ones dissing this album have either not heard it or are just 'tru-metalhead' posers who will just sit in their fuckin well and will not appreciate anything new. This was a great record in my opinion.
" if anybody else's name was on 'Risk,' it would have sold "

This was a great album, and would surely sell if not for the name 'Megadeth' on it and mind you,.. Dave Mustaine has never made crap music. NEVER.:)

Your first sentence looks like you meant to say "wouldn't sell if not for the name Megadeth", then backspaced, kludged and forgot to fix the rest.

Also, the woooorld neeeeds a heeewooo...

Some people think open-mindedness is the same as having a questionable taste in music.

If that's the case I would gladly label myself close minded. I know everyone has their own opinions but I cant see why anyone would like this album tbh, It just sounds like a shitty attempt to emulate 90's Metallica which was never great to begin with.

Agreed. It's not like I go in listening to a new album thinking "I really hope this sucks. I hope I waste my time listening to it. I hope there are absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever." No. I go in thinking "I haven't heard this before. Maybe it'll be my new favorite album. Who knows, maybe I've uncovered a masterpiece. Or maybe it's just something I can come back to later if I like it."

I am as open-minded as I can be when it comes to music. It's the only area in my life where I'm optimistic. But regardless of my approach, albums like Risk just don't do anything for me.

Indeed, I would consider myself open minded about music and willing to give anything a try regardless of what people say about it, But the Majority's opinion is right on with this one.

Keep listening man.

- some people forget Metallica sold out in 1991.

And Megadeth in 1992

still,90s Megadeth is miles better than 90s Metallica.

I can't agree with you on that. 90's Metallica > 90's Megadeth [excluding RIP] Just my opinion of course.

I've just noticed your user name and now I get your posts

Maybe Megadeth sold out in 1992, I won't argue with that; but still, in my humble opinion, the albums from Countdown to Extinction to Cryptic Writings are better than what Metallica did from the selftitled album to Reload. And I'm not that much into neither Metallica, nor Megadeth these days (if you were thinking you've got a Megadeth fanboy answer or attitude).

The first megadeth dissapointment. Its as weak as St. anger but the war between megadeth and metallica is getting childish anyway.

Not as bad as some people stay, but still bland and boring. As some people have said, I'd expect this from a glam band or something, not from Megadeth.

Actually this is a good album. Commercial moments are many, but it isn't bad. The songs are very well arranged and Marty played more than admirably.

I didn't say it was bad, I just said it was not good. Kinda average stuff. Not something I'd spend money on, but I'm not bothered if anyone else likes this album.

Few songs has small parts what were good, but well there is nothing. I hated then, hate now. I have listen 3 times this in full and seems this will be last one. Simply rubbish.

This is bad, this is really, really bad album. Risk must have been the first Megadeth album I ever heard back in the late 90's and even then I hated it, not just one or two songs here and there but all of them, every single one. I remember feeling very confused because I knew they were supposed to a huge band but their music sounded like total garbage to me. Luckily the copy I had also had another disc with some of their better songs from Rust in Peace, Peace Sells and Countdown, so at least there was something worth listening to.

They knew it was bad.

Not your typical Megadeth album to be expected, I had low views on this in my youth but having revisited it recently I find this a very authentic piece of work. So to the folks who still shame this album, wake up.

By the way, Crush 'em is a killar track.
