Morbid Angel's fifth full length, 'Gateways to Annihilation,' comes to us as a truly monolithic piece of Death Metal. At first listen this may be very hard to consume but I believe it came out of natural, obersvable progression. What Morbid Angel began on 'Blessed Are the Sick' and continued on through David Vincent's departure and their first full length with Steve Tucker is clearly sustained in well form here and even expanded upon to an extent. That certain element I am talking about is a heaviness, an atmosphere, a "larger than life" persona, that seeps through their production, performance, and especially their lyrical content.

Vastly underrated.

There is their gold, treasure and wealth,
The only condition is to ignore them,
Those who feed on corruption and weave death

Vastly underrated.

I agree. This and Domination are my favorites of theirs.

I think this is their most aggressive album, definitely my favorite.

This is a very underrated album, and my favourite with Steve Tucker on vocals. "Summoning Redemption" is a monstrous song!

There are some Ripping Corpse style riffs that seep into this album. Listen to the 'Industry' demo and you will see where the ideas for this album come from.

This sounds like where Bloodbath got their sound for The Fathomless Mastery from.

Tone or style? I'd disagree with the latter

Idk, I just got into extreme metal a little over a year ago (I know, I'm really late to the party), and I've been trying to explore a bunch of different groups. I made this comment earlier this year, but I don't think I realized that this is just how modern death metal generally sounds.

So yeah, I suppose I meant tone, but in retrospect, the Bloodbath comparison was unnecessary.

Used to happen to me all the time when I was getting acquainted with extreme metal I suppose I still am, to a degree.

This album is probably better than both FFttF and Domination. It hits harder than Domination without the stupid instrumental track, and the vocals are less belch-y than some of the vocals on some Domination tracks (specifically vocals like on the opening track of that album). The album also seems to have a little more focus than FFttF.

Domination still ranks close to this one, but I think this one is just a tad better.

Still doesn't beat out the classics that are the first three albums, though.

This is their best album in my opinion. Best tone and writing style. Punishingly slow and heavy. Tucker kicks ass.

Saw this on vinyl in a little local record shop this past weekend. Seeing it that large reminded me of how stunning this album cover is.
