Listened to this album one and a half times, and it already sounds pretty good.

Rating: 9 Amazing metalcore, with some slight prog elements starting to show in the bands songwriting

Rating: 9 I'd say Colors barely edges this one out. This one is way more aggressive though.

Rating: 7 Selkies: The Endless Obsession is the only track on this album worth anything more than the seven I have given the album as a whole. Impressive and worth more seven years ago but now the album pales in comparison to their newer ones. Seven years ago this album was definitely worth at least an eight but Between the Buried in Me have came a long way since this and are now far more impressive as a whole. However, I will say Selkies is one of the best tracks they have ever wrote.

Might give it a re-listen, but I remember finding this album really distasteful

You are entirely entitled to your opinion, but given some of the stuff you have noted liking I would definitely give this album at least one more spin. At the very least I would be surprised if you rate it below a 7. Also, have you heard Colors?

I've always thought the "heavier" passages of BtBaM felt...forced. It's not their area of expertise IMO. If they cut that out, they'd probably be among my favourite bands.

This album is probably their "heaviest", so...
