After a career of releasing similar albums, Sonata Arctica's fifth studio effort - "Unia" - goes away from their usual style to offer something slightly more progressive. As a warning, "Unia" will have some fans and some detractors, and I belong to the latter category, despite loving progressive metal and liking the band.

This is one of the bands that may be a perfect example of how heavy metal fans are often ungrateful and don't know what they want. Reckoning Night, their previous album, was very well received, but there were some complaints about some generic and repetitive songs - people thought that the band should add some more variations to their style. Then came Unia, the album that totally redefined Sonata Arctica's music; people, of course, complained that they should basically repeat Silence a thousand times over in order for the fans to be satisfied. Well, you can't please everyone, and Sonata Arctica gave a big middle finger to the latter ones.

Havent heard it much since i first got it, but as a fan of both power and accessible prog i felt that it was too bland to be good prog and just not great power either. it has its moments imo (caleb) but also drags in a lot of places. i don't feel like they tried to put out an album of filler, the songs feel like they were worked on but something just doesn't click about them.

This album is definitely a grower. It took me a few extra listens to appreciate it.

People, dont rate this album this low just because its different from all the others. its still sonata arctica!!. Toni's conpositions are beautiful and melancholic, reflecting how he actually feels. Like Baz said, it takes time to "grow" in you. give it some time people. (even though its been 2 years)
I give this album much more than a 7 because of how toni's feelings are expressed in his music. also his songs are complex and intriguing.
SONATA FTW

I'm considering upping my rating to ten on this one... I said I wouldn't award these guys a perfect rating until they come up with something that shows off all their strongest points (Unia is way too one-sided for that) but it was a pretty important album in my personal listening history - it showed me that I like some things everyone else bashes, and that I should consciously go in the direction of "weird" in my listening habits. Which was a pretty big discovery back in 2007.

I never grow tired of this album even after all these years. There's something about this music that makes me fall in love with it anew everytime I hear it. Tony knows exactly how to corporate emotions in music with his songwriting. Everytime I listen to his songs I discover and feel something new which definately makes them grow on me. Just like this album. One of my favourite albums of all time. I just can't praise it enough.

I'm amazed that everyone's giving this such high praise and throwing out 9s and 10s. I thought I was the only one.

10 years after I discovered Sonata Artica, and a few years after I actually moved away from them slowly, Unia still has to be my favourite album from them! There's just something about it I can't explain, it just gets me. Anyway, I was always more into the few "progressive" albums than into the repetitive older ones. That's a 9 in my book, close to 10 for the nostalgia effect it now has.
