The local indy record store ran a pic of Slayer on the cover of their most recent promo zine, along with a partial exchange from an (imaginary?) interview which went as follows:

Q: What's the title of the new Slayer album?
A: World Painted Blood.
Q: What's it sound like?
A: What on Earth do you think?

It's pretty much exactly what you think. 10 or so songs clocking in around 40 minutes (11 tracks, 39 minutes and change this go around), some slower paced tracks, one or two creepy psychotic murderer tracks and a couple short but sweet barn burners played at 900 miles an hour (that's 1,448 kph to our metric friends) and lots of, uh, spirited and chaotic solos that make GIT grads cringe.

Rating: 9 This album is A LOT better than Christ Illusion which was an average album nothing more. this is the return of Slayer after many years of not that great releases. most of the songs rule.

but the HIGHLIGHT of the album is Tom's singing. IMO it is the best Tom Araya since Reign In Blood. i know this last phrase is only my opinion so dont kill me people..

Rating: 10 Perfect come back! All best of Slayer can be heard on World Painted Blood: a bit like Reign in Blood, a bit of South Of Heaven... Exactly what I expected from the Masters

Rating: 8 Loved this album! Slayer never fails to impress.

Rating: 7 Better than almost all other 90s and 00s Slayer stuff,a litle bit more variety and amazing riffs, the ways Tom sings is still not as enjoyable to me like in the golden Slayer era.

OK album, very disappointed in you Slayer
Angelic Storm - 14.04.2010 at 00:21
Rating: 8 Great album! Like ''Christ Illusion'' it's only prevented from being a classic because of a couple of tracks which aren't as good as the rest. (The production also sucks) That said, it's very good, and a couple of the songs have a feeling of ''Diabolus In Musica" about them, which is fine by me, as I liked that album! Its not groundbreaking no, but it's Slayer doing what they do best, and you cant really ask for anything more! xD

And this is my problem with the album.
Some songs have an 'old Slayer' feel, at least to a certain extent. However, there's no way I can enjoy metal with such crappy modern production. It sounds empty, sterile and thin.
And it's probably due to production too (at least partly) but vocals suck. Only standard dumb yelling with barely any emotion. Very weak.

Give me the production on "Show No Mercy" or "Hell Awaits" over this weak modern sound anyday.

It's not even the fact that it's modern. It just sounds horribly compressed. The songs arent allowed to breath, it sounds like they're struggling for air! What I try and do with an album with crap production, is try and look past it, and see the quality of the songs underneath it. Some songs definitely have the old school Slayer feel, and although the production definitely serves to stifle that, I can still see the great potential in those songs. As for the vocals...I think Tom is struggling with his vocals these days, its probably due to him getting older. But I think they're okay, they certainly dont ruin the album for me. He's definitely giving his all, that much I can tell! Just listen to his voice breaking up at the end of the last verse in ''Psychopathy Red''. Sure, its quite painful to listen to, but you know he's putting everything into that, which to me overrides the lack of quality in the scream. haha

I know the production of ''Show No Mercy'' and ''Hell Awaits'' is criticised, but I dunno why...they sound fine to me!

Which is precisely typical of a modern production.

Not necessarily. Production can be modern without stifling the sound. Exodus' ''Tempo Of The Damned'' is a great example. The production is definitely modern, but the sound is crystal clear, and punchy. The production on ''World Painted Blood'' is anything but crystal clear! The sound has no bite to it, it sounds terribly muffled. I think the producer just sucks! haha
HellTrooper - 06.05.2010 at 23:09
Rating: 8 The best of the last 15 years. Short songs help the LP. Too modern production, with another one this album could really be *very* good.

Rating: 9 I thoroughly enjoy this album on a regular basis. I'm a total Slayer loyalist, and I can honestly say I haven't really been disappointed with ANYTHING they've done. Some of the stuff they've done has been slightly out of color for them, but I think they've done it well, and compromised nothing in doing so. I would say that along with the other thrash bands keeping their name in the ring recently, Slayer has blended a bunch of the good shit from the past, with a bunch of good shit from the present, and made one kick ass fuckin album.

Rating: 8 This album is not like classic Slayer. If you had someone who didnt know who Slayer was and Make him/her listen to Rein in Blood than World Painted Blood. I bet they wouldt know it was the same band. On that note I think the album is still awesome. Some songs are fast and loud while others are creepy and messed up, and I think creepy and demented has Slayer written all over it. The bonus DVD "Playing with dolls" is probably the more horrifying thing ive ever watched. Im sure it didnt help that I was Stoned out of my mind but non the less. But its still good 'ol Slayer and lets all hope Diabolus in Musica NEVER happens again.
Iron Nostarion - 12.03.2011 at 13:36
Rating: 7 What can I say. Three of the Big Four are just meh nowadays. Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax. I can't say that about Megadeth because, despite the fame and the "not bad" money they've got, they're still delivering great stuff because Mustaine is about skill. And since he still has a tiny bit of knack about making stuff better than 'tallica, then he will do so, because it's not that hard anymore.

But this is not a Megadeth album. This is Slayer. And the album isn't half bad, don't get me wrong. It's not up to the classics, which is not what to expect after so many years and money and halls of fame. I've not seen too many bands or musicians from any genre who produced great stuff after they were uber-famous like Slayer now. The album is good to hear, but it's not something I'll be putting as a favorite or playing a lot. Just "Meh", like all the Revival Thrash. I wish for all of them Big Four realize that they're old and just go on big tours and please their fans, not disappoint them with albums that sound nothing special at all (again except for Megadeth, who still do great because Mustaine's got a few heated musicians like Broderick to carry it on). They'll sell better off the tours, anyway, if that's what they care for.

Rating: 7 Although its predecessor marked a return-to-form of the band's signature sound, i prefer the progression and structure of 'World painted Blood'. Thing is, when slayer play the shorter songs here, they sound as if they came straight out of 1986. But on the longer songs (i.e, longer than four minutes), there is more tension and build-up at the songs' respective intros, making the songwriting seem more complex than usual. Nonetheless, it can get very bland indeed, as on the extremely generic 'Americon' and just-as-pointless 'Human strain', not to mention the unnecessary midpoint of 'Playing with dolls' (just being picky here), but this album just goes to show that slayer aren't afraid of a little variation in their music. Sure, they've shown progression on earlier records, but not as obviously as on 'World painted Blood'.

I'd say the problem is actually the fact that this is Slayer. If it weren't Slayer, then it'd probably be a good album.

Rating: 8 Love the f&ckin' crazy-sounding Hanneman solo leading into the bridge section of the title track as Tom repeats "like a disease, spreading death, erasing your existence" and Dave pounds out a cool rhythm. Great song and a good album.
Metropolis_Dream - 05.04.2013 at 22:26
Very very mediocre Slayer album. Rather dissapointed with this one. A few tracks are outstanding but the rest is unnessecary. Megadeths "Endgame" just destroys it.

I find it hilarious also that you're insulting hardcore considering how much they influenced thrash, the "metalhead's trve genre."
...And what's wrong with rock? Blasphemous as it may be, there's more to music than thrash metal. There's sure as some hardcore and rock better than anything Slayer ever did, that's for damn sure.

Not really. It is much better IMO.

Some songs are surprisingly good like Beauty Through Order, Hate Worldwide, Public Display Of Dismemberment, Human Strain. But overall this album is a bit weaker than it's predecessor. Beauty Through Order is maybe one of their best songs ever written, however Christ Illusion is more consistent.
