In recent years, only a handful of bands surprised me as much as Agalloch from Portland, Oregon. With albums such as The Mantle and Ashes Against The Grain, they established themselves as one of the most talented US acts. I suddenly realized that I was missing out on one of their albums, 1999's Pale Folklore.

The first observation is that Agalloch's unique style - an atmospheric blend of folk, doom, death and much more - is already well defined on this album. While the production is understandably of poorer quality compared to their more recent releases, it is clear enough to enjoy the large amount of creativity showcased throughout the tracks.

Well, I've pretty much gotten used to it now, but when I listen to The Mantle and then Pale Folklore, it tends to sound a bit... ugly. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't really take away from the album, hence the 9 rating. (I mean, it's not like I'm the only one who thinks this).

yes, it's rougher than their newer stuff, but that's why I've come to like it most.

and yes, i'm quoting your year-old comment.

Rating: 9 I think the production on this album does hurt it. It shouldn't receive a full crystal clear remaster of course but I think it could be made a little better.

Haha yes, that's the big factor here. I've actually come to like the production a lot, and yes, I do think it makes the album better and more 'unique' in a way. I still prefer the sound of The Mantle and Marrow better, but this is a great sound that suits the style of music.

Yep, pretty much the only complaint I have about this album. I think the transitions from one song to another could be a lot better, since it's definitely hurting the overall quality of the album. The other albums don't have this specific complaint at all, luckily. So yeah, this album would be one of the rare cases I'd definitely buy (again) if they remastered it.

Rating: 9 Awesome release, it's my second favorite album by Agalloch (behind The Mantle), and the first one I've heard from them.

Just bought this, the booklet has all the lyrics in shiny golden color as the band logo in the album cover. It's so damn beautiful.

Rating: 10 Everytime i listen to this, more reasons i have to play a guitar, one of best album of this band because some years later they will release the best album i ever heard. A tear was shed when i heard the melancholy spirit.
