Blotted Science is an instrumental metal outfit consisting of guitarist Ron Jarzombek (famous for quite a number of other projects apparently, but as I'm not familiar with any of them I can't compare this CD to his other outputs) Alex Webster (Cannibal Corpse) and drummer Carlie Zeleny (Behold? The Arctopus).

Excellent Instrumental Death Progressive Metal with some Jazz element .

I'm glad someone else recognises the death metal in the band, despite being no vocals. Most people don't get that ;]

Great technical metal but hardly any death metal at all in it. And that doesn't have to do with the lack of vocals

You just rendered a whole heap of tech death bands "technical metal" as most modern tech death bands don't have much "death metal" in them aside from growls - congrats Marcel

and so-called mdern tech death bands aren't death metal at all, no matter if they use growls or not. The music isn't dm at its base hence NOT dm in any whatever way

Even though Marcel is completely right and this album has little (if anything) to do with death metal, it's still a great record. Nothing less to be expected from such a great musician as Ron Jarzombek.

Who in their right mind would ever call this Death metal? It has elements of Death metal, but not enough to call it a "death metal album".

It is a really great album though.

I think the most death metal-like thing on this album is the presence of Alex Webster in the line-up.

Who in their right mind would ever call instrumental tech-death "death metal?" No one, and that's very wrong in my opinion and precisely why this is laden with enough elements of what is called death metal in the modern age Wanky tech-death has virtually nothing to do with death metal of old with the exception of the vocals, yet it is called tech death. Try to think of it from that perspective. If I were to dub over this record with generic death vocals, do you really think people would still call it simply "progressive metal" or the norm of "tech / progressive death?" I'd beg the latter, you and NocturnalStalker included. Hell, even wikipedia calls them tech-death now it seems.

I'll have to revisit the album. I recall the guitar and bass tuning (as well as production) being very thick and chunky, similar to death metal, but recall very little actual death metal elements in the music. Mostly I recall my fellow Texan just being very technical, and progressive as usual. My statement had nothing to do with the lack of vocals, I'm more than aware that vocals are only one aspect of music.

Well to my mind most tech death bands have very little death metal in. Necrophagist's 'Epitaph' is probably worth a comparitive listen. Haven't listened to it in years but I'm guessing it's probably not got that much in.

Technically immaculate (even more so than Necrophagist), but not very pleasant or easy to digest. The album length doesn't help either
