Along with the Norwegian scene in the late 80s/early 90s there was another scene that was trying to get out of the lairs of darkness, the Greek black metal scene. To some of you might sound funny, "the Greek black metal scene", but there were bands just like Rotting Christ, Necromantia and Varathron that had their very own style setting the flames of Hell alight in the South along with their black metal brothers in the North. The years were passing by and Rotting Christ after they formed a cult name in the underground black metal scene, they reach nowadays, being a well-known and respected band in the extreme sound, with "Sanctus Diavolos". In the beginning, the canvas is pure white, the color of an angel's wings. Then the music starts, staining the purity with evil. Swathes of dark grey are painted in thick, harsh strokes by guitars, creating a haze of engulfing smoke. The strokes are applied fast, but with cold precision, creating a swirling cloud on the canvas, a picture of calculated chaos - the meat of the unhallowed creation. Read more ›› |

So I have been up and down the discography repeatedly and I have come to the conclusion that as far as consistent quality goes, this is there best. Some of their better songs may lie on other albums, but none can match this one for sheer start to finish awesomeness.

Is this the holy thing to see? Is this the land that sun shines above the Heaven? Hear those children's desperate cries: Oh - children do they cry? Do they hear their fathers' sigh? Is this the fertile place to be? Is this the land that sprouts Green rich gardens? Hear those souls' flickering cries! Do they beg? Do they smile? Do they frame the long line? I should get that on a T Shirt  Sanctus Diavolos and Serve in Heaven are just amazing tho, and the rest of the album is solid too

Except for the opening track, their worst song ever, this record has an exceptionally fascinating atmosphere, thanks to the sporadic symphonic passages. The title track, with its gorgeous guitar plays that start not until midway, is mind-blowingly orgasmic. Its intro drums and Sakis' chanting, and its choirs feel very sinister. Sanctimonius is a pace killer but it's not that long. Plus, it has an interesting composition. I just wished they had chosen a stronger opening that can set the mood of the album, such as the second track, and, if they insisted, used the 1st track somewhere in the middle as a filler.
