Norway's leading Gothic Metal band nowadays has to be Tristania, since Theatre of Tragedy went electronic and lost their singer and Sirenia haven't risen as high yet, only Tristania keeps the music really alive.
And now when they are about to release their fourth album, the expectations are sky-high all around the globe, because after such unexpected success "World of Glass" became, everyone want yet another album in that class. And "Ashes" it meant to be that album, but is it? Read below and judge for yourself.

Great album. I love this era of Tristania, and find Ashes & Illumination a great combination to listen to.

Good music approach, liked this style, but for songwriting this doesn't reserve much... although "equilibrium" and "shadowman" are two great tracks!

I love this album... its style and Vibeke's voice are just magical.

By the way, it's really underrated if you ask me.

While Beyond the Veil is always going to be the magnum opus of Tristania, Ashes might be thematicaly my favourite album by them. It is just something about the sound and the atmosphere of it that truly captures. While it's still gothic metal and all, it sounds modern and not full of cliches.

Underrated desolation at its best.

Unlike Sirenia, Tristania definitely didn't sell out with this one, but in my opinion something is lacking. There are no symphonic parts here, and Vibeke doesn't sing enough. Her voice is also not as good as in the previous Tristania's albums. Overall this album feels like gothic rock with harsh vocals. The only song that I really enjoyed was Equilibrium.
The same can be said in relation to the next album, Illumination. But as I said, it's nowhere near as bad as Sirenia's albums since Nine destinies and a downfall.

I listened to this album once again and now I like it more. I think you should give this album some time to appeal to you.
