The Epigenesis marks the first we've heard from the Sultans of Sumerian Sonic Slaughter since Emissaries was released four years ago. The band continues pretty much where they left off, playing what is basically at it's core midpaced melodic black metal.

Melodic black metal. Ho-hum. Don't we see enough of this?

30.10.2010 The masters of modern Mesopotamian melodic black are back. Epigensis sees Melechesh continuing to put their stamp on melodic bm by incorporating all sorts of exotic scales and instrumentation foreign to many western ears. All the exotic is piled on to a solid foundation of pounding drums, sneering vocals and ripping riffs to create an album that definitely stands apart from and above the crowd.

The fact is albums like Emissaries increase exceptions, but you must consider that that was a masterpiece and they cannot achieve to compose an album like that every time they release an album.

Anyway, listened to it once, more sounds like Sphynx to me. Didn't catch me like Emissaries did for first time, but for sure I'll try it more. Maybe I found something in it.

With my first listen of this I am really not blown away. Perhaps I should just wait for my physical copy before I listen again to get the best quality.

Rating: 6 I still need to digest this more, but it's a huge step down from Emissaries. The songs are just way too long - I find myself looking over at my CD player display while I'm driving for almost every track wondering why it got boring, and I do it every time at the 5 minute mark. Shorter versions of most songs would make this much better

I agree, but only in the two instrumental songs ("When Halos Of Candles Collide" and "A Greater Chain Of Being"), too long, and besides they are two songs of the same style, for me, two songs in this way in one album can be a bit tedious. On the other hand, it is good folk, and between these two i prefer "A Greater Chain Of Being".
Dangerboner - 17.12.2010 at 19:58
Rating: 6 I had no problem with the instrumental lengths, but pretty much the entire first half of the album is too drawn out (especially the first song), except for maybe that one really fast song.

Rating: 8 Very good album.
Daydream Nation - 27.01.2011 at 00:50
The best "long album" of 2010 (ie over 70 minutes). All the songs just flow very well and they are fairly solid for the most part...a couple in the middle are inferior, but the first four or five songs in the beginning and the last few towards the end are just beyond impressive. This was my first experience with Melechesh and I guarantee it will not be my last. Belongs in my top 10, that's for sure. No way it's beating Shining [NOR] or Alcest, but it's a damn good record.

Yeah, to me it also was my first experience, try with "Sphinx" and "Emissaries", you will be impressed =) , specially with "Emissaries" (their best record), but "Sphinx" is tremendous too.
Akbarz - 03.02.2011 at 22:17
Rating: 7 The instrumental songs are just great!
MétalNoir - 14.03.2011 at 05:06
Rating: 8 Sounds like blackened Orphaned Land. Not bad news, but I did prefer the addictive riffs and blast beats of Emissaries.

Jaeryd17‍ - 19.07.2013 at 01:56
Rating: 10 I fucking love this album... how does this not have a higher average rating? Worthy of, at the very least, an 8.5 average. It's at least on par with Emissaries, if not better. Basically just a perfect album (at least, for my tastes) all the way through.

But I suppose if many of the complaints are about song length, that would make sense, 'cause I love long songs while others might not enjoy that.
