This are interesting times to take a look at the Extreme Metal in Finland, a lot of releases are showing beloved bands evolving and adapting to the times. Kalmah is one of them, once tagged as a copycat of Children Of Bodom (yeah, other one), they have changed so much through the time that comparing them to the after mentioned act is quite ridiculous.

Well, from the first dark, crunchy guitar riff, it's obvious that that this isn't a typical Kalmah album. One of the most standout (and very probably the most controversial) changes lies in the vocal style, which have changed from phlegm-drenched black metal shrieks to low-register "cookie monster" death growls. I'm not a fan of the new vocals (take the terribly under-melodic vocal intro to "Time Takes Us All", for example), but I wasn't a huge fan of the old ones either, so this isn't a deal-breaking issue for me. Eventually I got used to the old ones, but they were very grating for quite a while. The quality and creativity haven't really changed; they've simply switched ends of the spectrum, so this issue really comes down to personal preference. However, a lot more than the vocals changed here.

Rating: 9 This album took a long while to grow on me, but it kept sneaking random tracks into my Spotify sessions. I would hear a track and go "what awesomeness is this?", and when I looked at the name, it was more often than not from this very album. Complex enough to stick, epic and melodig enough to impress, Kalmah have created a fine album indeed here.

Kalmah melodic death metal is one of the most unique groups. I had not seen in the style of melodic death metal stronger than this ....

I love this album. "Nice collection ....

There is no doubt the most powerful melodic death metal

Rating: 9 I just raised the rating from an 8 to a 9. This is one of the melodic death metal albums that I'm still not tired of, what a brutal, yet epic and majestetic album!

Rating: 4 Bitter Metallic Side is pure awesomeness, but aside from that I find it very bland and boring. The vocals are horrible as well. As always with Kalmah.

What do you like about Bitter that others dont have? They all seem very similar to me

Yeah, I guess they are all pretty similar. But, things fit together and aren't tedious on that one. Especially, the chorus is pretty rad.

Rating: 9 Good album. But not so good as three first. There isn't so much thrash and maybe black influences.....and low vocals are boring sometimes. But songwriting is good as always.

Rating: 6 I'm very disappointed about this album There is a big change in the vocals in contrast to the previous albums which now sounds much deeper and muffled. Also the songs are much slower.

In the beginning of the production of "The Black Waltz" kalmah published demo tracks for "Bitter Metallic Side" and "The Groan of the Wind" which sounds much more like the tracks from "Swampsong". Especially The Groan of the wind was a killer song like "hereos to us".

It seems 1.5 year before the release they rerecored the songs in another sound settings to the end result. I have to say my good, first impression were totally ruined
