Rage's 1998 album XIII is not only their thirteenth album and features 13 songs, it also contains once more the aid of the Lingua Mortis Orchestra. That doesn't help to make the album really exciting, but at times interesting. Metallica's influence is evident, but in general Rage have their own sound and proven over the years to be able to produce many many albums their own way. On XIII (thirteen) the orchestration is already an integral part of the composition and not added later on as on the 'Lingua Mortis' album. The makes the sound clearer and does not let any instrument drown in the flood of others.

Rage first album with original songs featuring the Lingua Mortis Orchestra. This was a nice suprise as I thought it was pretty boring when I bought it. Most of the stuff here is actually good. The orchestra arrangement are a nice addition to the songs and I would only single out In Vain as a weak track, the rolling stones cover could have been left out as well. The rest is decent all the way. It's a quite heavy album that is mostly mid-paced but that's okey. The production is good, lot better than on the Lingua Mortis EP. What I miss is any true highlights, no song stands out as an absolute killer.

Rage are about to go on tour and play the entire album with a orchestra this summer. I don't know how well most of these songs will work in a live setting but if they get the sound balanced right between the band and the orchestra it could be nice.
