There are musical formulas that never become exhausted. Bands that choose such formulas as basis for their works enjoy long-lasting, successful careers. No fan requires any change in their musical direction, everyone is universally happy if such a band releases another album that fits into the band's template. Among classic bands that fit this description are AC/DC, Motörhead, Slayer, to name just a few that immediately spring to mind.

Cradle Of Filth are a band that have performed a slow but legendary downfall. And they managed to rise like a phoenix from its ash, but faster than any phoenix could. Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa is now the second count in their rise and still has something to add in terms of speed, darkness and pure blasting metal. This record is once more a concept album and deals with the demoness Lilith, which happened to be the first wife of Adam in the book of Genesis. But we are here to talk about music, so let's get into it!

Love them or hate them, Cradle Of Filth are back with their most extreme album since Cruelty And The Beast. The band are still the modern force you have come to terms with of recent years, but the band have gone up yet another gear with this release.

Lilith Immaculate and Forgive Me Father are both fuckin' weird. They're too fluffy to my taste, where Godspeed was mostly solid and in-your-face. Here the symphonies are weak and mellow, the vocals are blah (c'mon why not discard black metal vocals to that point? Rhapsody has more terrific vocals nowadays...) and the tempo is too slow. Grow some balls and break our teeth with powerful tracks like Tragic Kingdom or Shat Out of Hell! Well, I guess I'll have to listen to the entire album before making judgements but to date I'm not in the least bit impressed, I must say.

Meh, Lilith Immaculate horrified me at first (fluffiness), but it grew on me after a couple of listens. But Forgive Me Father is just.... shit. Reminds of Scorched Earth, only much less catchy.
And what the fuck is up with Dani's image? He looks like the Mad Hatter from "Alice in Wonderland"... Jesus....

Ha ha that's so true, he really looks like Johnny Depp in that movie (who himself looked like Madonna...)! There's something very Tim Burton-esque about the whole album concept and from what I've heard the gothic side of CoF seems to be overwhelming their BM side, particularly Forgive Me Father.

I don't know. I Keep o thinking he looks like Ben Stiller in Zoolander, but perhaps he's kind of a strange unhpo;ly mix of Ben Stiller, Johnny Depp and a big forheaded brit.

Fantastic album. A lot heavier than Godspeed was, and I'm liking that aspect.
Bonus tracks are amazing if you get the chance to hear them!
Good stuff, CoF!

Ok Now I can rate this new CoF album accordingly! First of all i wanna say it's a little hard to enter your mind but when it does, it's a Hell of a ride! Besides that, it's typical CoF stuff, which equal to excellent!

Here are my rating, it can change, but if it does it will be minor change.

So :

CD 1 - 9 + 9 + 10 + 9 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 9 + 10 = 106 / 11 = 9,63 - Rounded - 10
CD 2 - 9 + 10 + 10 + 9 = 38 / 4 (I don't rate the demo versions...) = 9.5 - Rounded - 10

So for me, album of the year so far!

very well done CoF.

P.S. - Even though, Dani image is a real joke

I think is album is great, during the first listening it was like a storm and I didn't get behind all this thunder... But right after that it somehow stays in my memory, maybe because of its heaviness... Let's see how this will develop after more listenings, but from now it's great... I love how they combine the styles of their former albums in this one, even if I hate Thornography and even Nymphetamine, what markes this album with their influence is here and then shown... but always covered with great moments of the albums up to Midian... Damnation And A Day has its greates influence in this, and I like it, DAAD was fantastic imo!

This album is so fucking amazing! Unbelievable some ratings on this site...

This is the best lineup since Cruelty and the Beast, and for sure Ashley "Ellyllon" Jurgemeyer is the best addiction of the band in many years, and have a decisive contribution to this masterpiece, as well as the (imo) best drummer they ever had, Martin "Marthus" ?karoupka. I even think he is the responsible for the CoF ressurection after the deception Thornography.

Exactly what I think! Martin is one of the best metal drummers (besides Hahto, Duhamel...) and performs his parts in an awesome way, he is truly (after Dani and maybe together with Paul) the best member of the current lineup... and Ellyllon is also awesome, I like what she composes solo too.

I think this is their best album together with Midian and Godspeed. Even if the concept is pretty much impossible to follow through the lyrics, wich nontheless are very hunting and interesting, Dani's vocals are evergreen, and mach more audible than the first albums -wich I dont like all that much for that reason- and it has speed beyond imagination, violence and those catchy bits that never hurt. I wish I'd bought the deluxe edition...

I do not know, but this album "Darkly Darkly..." for me is very dissapointing. It is the same things of the last album. It has a great production, great sound, but any song seams really interesting. The whole album is catchy, I know, but, I could not find any amazing song, just parts of a good album, but nothing else.
For me, the Thornography album seems more interesting than this brand new. At lest they were more original!

It's a nice album with rich compositions, not like the "old" CoF albums but hey we're all growing older I still prefer Godspeed on the Devil's Thunder tho which seem more solid but this is a nice album too. I don't think we'll ever see albums like Midian or Cruelty and The Beast but like I saod before, it's evolution... Like it or not.

With the exception of Forgive me father...(A track that i consider to be the weakest song of the album) this album is solid, and certainly one of COF's best in the 21st Century. Mind you, when i first listened to this record,i absolutely hated it for some reason. But this album is indeed a grower, because, as is the case with Cradle of filth these days, albums like this need more than one listen to fully take in what's happening. And even then its either a love/hate kinda thing.

Listened recently again to "Forgive Me Father" as its great riff popped out of my head. I decided to listen to the rest of the album but as expected most of it was filler trash... Only "One Foul Step From The Abyss" stood out imo with the great synths in the last part of the song. You could either find a couple of interesting riffs like in "The Persecution Song". The famous "Lilith Immaculate" was overrated asf.

That's been my experience with Cradle of Filth as a band since I first listened to them. Overall the albums always seemed to contain excessive filler tracks with a couple standouts but never a fully consistent album of strong songs. They always reminded me of those one-hit-wonder bands that drop a huge single and disappear back into mediocrity never to be heard from again, only Cradle of Filth has just enough staying power to come up with at least one of those singles with every new album.
