Let me tell you how I know that an album is hard to digest but great. When I put it on for the first time, most of the songs blur together, it's impossible to tell them apart. The first impression about the album is accentuated by those cool fragments of songs that remain in my memory. During the second listen I manage to hear most of those fragments. Just when I'm about to play the album for the third time to get those last cool bits, I realise that there are some more cool bits that I picked up during my second listen. With every consecutive listen, the number of cool bits increases, and my mind connects them to respective songs. After 10 listens all bits are in place, the picture is complete and my smile is wider than a six-lane freeway, because the album is brilliant.

Here we are again. I say that because Enslaved are beating the proverbial "Nordic Black Metal" horse to death. It seems like this is becoming a standard out of the Northern European Black Metal scene these days. Scary makeup, growling vocals, droning guitars, and a complete lack of direction other than to throw in some "evil" lyrics. Like anyone will ever go as far as Mercyful Fate did in the 80's lyrically? Doubtful, and I haven't seen anyone do it yet.

30.09.2010 Over the last couple records, Enslaved seemed to be moving towards metal middle age... from Black Metal to Black Floyd. AEO sees them continuing the prog path, but at the same time drawing from the best elements of their past work. The tone of this is harsher. At times they show the familiar gallop of their old BM works, at others the weirdness of Monumension and the confidence of Below The Lights. i love this album so much i want to fuck it.

Oh I dunno, the day isn't over yet. Me, Troy and Mr. D just trolled the crap out of the name your band thread.

Same here, even though in time my preference has shifted slightly towards "Isa". When AEO was released it was by far my favorite Enslaved album. It will always remain an all-time classic though.

Isa is definitely the ultimate Enslaved release. Has subtle depth like nothing else.

True, "Axioma Ethica Odini" is certainly easier to get into and easier on the ears. "Isa" on the other hand takes a bit more time, but has a more profound effect. What that effect is, I really cannot say. I guess that's why it is subtle

Vertebrae is very sterile in tone, I didn't like it personally even though it's still accomplished.

Marcel's got a point about WoY, Willy.

As for this being less Floyd, sure. But that doesn't make it any more close to the type of black metal I enjoy. Personally I find Enslaved to be one of the least enjoyable extreme metal bands.

I wouldn't call this album boring, but their last three I would. This time around they were a lot more... I dunno, engaging. Still not my cup of black coffee but it's considerably more "headstrong" than most of their previous works.

Meh. Apparently when two or more people dislike something popular it means they're somehow involved in a deep relationship.

I don't care what other people think about Enslaved, I personally haven't really been into them since... Frost? One of those bands that I never really felt the need to waste my time with.

I disagree. I think this is actually one of Enslaved's more simple albums. You pretty much know what you get after the first listen - it doesn't require a lot of effort because it's more or less straightforward in its somewhat progressive approach to black metal. Some of their previous releases maybe warrant more of a thorough investigation, but even then I wouldn't recommend anyone do it if they didn't feel "the magic" the first time around.

Amazing cause I am not a black metal fan!

Not to be like, elitist or whatever, but it really isn't amazing. I've come across loads of people in forums commenting on Enslaved threads in the same manner. "I don't like black metal, but I really like this band." And it's pretty much because Enslaved aren't solely a black metal band.

Again, at the end of the day it's one of those little arguments/technicalities that don't really matter, but I just wanted to point out that you're not alone in that kind of thinking. And to be honest, I'm probably the opposite in that I don't really like them because I do like black metal.

That's their main appeal for sure. When they were strictly black metal (everything up to and including Eld) they were at their best in my opinion. As soon as they started mixing in progressive elements I started losing interest. But you probably wouldn't enjoy their black metal era since you aren't a fan. At least, it's not a place I'd recommend someone like you - who mostly goes for atmo-sludge/post-metal - to start if you're looking to get into black metal.
