I agree that it is underrated since most people tend to listen to their latest stuff starting from Choronzon. But I don't think it is THAT good tbh. Depending on my mood I go from 7 to 8.

If it had a better production I think it would be a bit more appreciated but that's why i like it. It has all the technical bravado of the newer stuff with a vicious and nasty production.

Niothing is wrong with the production, I think it's sweet... It's the songwriting that sometimes I think is.... I don't know, not as good as the later stuff
THEN AGAIN.... It's been a long time since I listened to it. Gotta get my copy and spin it again.

A very underrated album by Akercocke, but then again Akercocke are an underrated band (perhaps not as much by the metal industry, but certainly by music in general). 'The Goat of Mendes' sees the band keeping to their rawness and no-holds-barred brand of death metal that were obvious on the band's debut, but this time also embracing some of the more progressive leanings that the complex structures of 'A Skin for dancing in' and 'Horns of Baphomet' quite naturally displayed. It isn't quite their best, but it certainly was a sign of great things to come.

Picked this up from a small used record store in the middle of Iowa for $6. Score.

Something decent HAD to turn out from that place sooner or later, eh?

This is actually probably my favorite album of theirs. I love progressive black metal when it's done well, and this is probably one of the crown jewels of the style. Songwriting is right on point, and Mendonca's vocals are all over the place in terms of range and delivery.
