The best Alternative Metal album of 2011

In Flames are a massive band, which made A Sense Of Purpose three years ago a massive disappointment to a lot of people. Three years on with a new record label and a new album Sounds Of A Playground Fading, let's see what's going on.

The album title does little for confidence, but album number ten actually isn't as bad as the title would imply. This is the same In Flames as the last albums, but the quality of songs is a level higher. The album has some nice songs on it, especially at the front and back ends with "Deliver Us" and the lively "The Puzzle" from the beginning, and "A New Dawn" near the end. There are some nice hooks and melodies here, last track "Liberation" could easily be a metal cover of a pop song. For the most part of the album, In Flames do what they have been doing quite successfully recently, which is churning out incredibly modern-sounding metal for the masses.

Let's nip this in the bud: this ain't no Jester Race. But ain't no A Sense of Purpose either.

Take a few deep breaths, maybe think of a nice time you spent with girl/boy/horsefriend and gently let all your preconceptions slide off you, much in the same way those lovely girls who you watch mud wrestle slide all over each other on those lonely Friday nights... I'm sure I had a point, something about the new Morbid Angel? I can't really remember. Oh yeah, the new In Flames. It's really very not bad, plenty of thick leading harmonies harking back as far as Reroute To Remain do a plenty fine job of rekindling a little bit of the love you felt for these guys.

Guys, I am looking forward to this one like on never of their releases before. Just hope, that they will do better job than on "A Sense Of Purpose". I want the next "Clayman", "Colony" or "Come Clarity" !!!

A Sense Of Purpose was the next Clayman (or similar), as they said. Too bad. I could tolerate the next Jester Race this time

Here's a 30 second preview of their upcoming single, "Deliver Us".

Sounds pretty kick ass IMO. Didn't expect this!

Because they're so different this time around. :

Seriously, they don't play melodic death metal anymore. They won't release anything like they did in the '90s. Just like Anathema. Either you like the new sound or you don't.

People who constantly bitch about "new In Flames vs. old In Flames" are annoying. 2001 called - it wants the legitimacy of your complaints back.

Im so looking forward to the album, I dont know why people are against their new style, if you like the old style metal there is plenty of other bands. and their changes from album to album is great, it only makes it unrepeting and more interesting. think their new style is better, its with it they stand apart from others

I'm pretty sure In Flames write the music they wanna play. In fact, I believe almost all bands (in the metal genre) create the music they wanna play. Simply because it's a genre where the music is written by themselves. If you start talking about pop-music there's a whole different ballgame.

Currently listening to the album. I think it's their worst effort till now. For those who were expecting the old sound to come back...go and get a gun !! I will just say that is the next step following the path of the last albums....Sorry.

I'm really sorry I'm not. Check my profile and make your guess about where I got it from. I just gave my opinion. I REALLY love In Flames, or at least, the band that wrote Clayman and the previous works.

I listened to Deliver Us a bunch of times yesterday and It's fucking excellent! I'm looking even more forward to this album now than before. I doubt it's going to be the next Reroute to Remain (one of the best metal releases ever), but judging by the single, SoaPF is going to be great.

Deliver Us sounds interesting, but nothing special imo. after an album as inconsistent as the last one (3-4 great tracks, the rest is shit) i didn't have high hopes anyway..

I like this song far better than anything on A Sense of Purpose, which, in my opinion was an utterly bad album, however, is it just me or the lyrics seem to be utter garbage? Not just simply bad but to me they don't make any sense at all.

From the sounds of the single "deliver us", im getting a very strong...likness to anders side project passenger. im a big in flames fan, have all their albums, have been my favorite band for the last...7 years now. im not worried bout the album at all. i love all their albums, the difference between them to me just prove how dynamic and musical they are. but i really do want to see some melodic death metal in this one. i know it will be good, im just not sure if it will be "in flames" good :/

I had no hope for this one, but A New Dawn is surprisingly decent. No Colony material, but still way better than the whole A Loss Of Purpose. And Deliver Us sounds nice too. Indeed we're witnessing a Return To Remain, so to speak

I've listened to all the possible teasers and samples I can, and I gotta say this is gonna be a solid album. Unlike most IF fanboys, I enjoyed ASOP to and extent, however where were the melodies?!?!???!?!
The title track just gives me chills, those melodies are back!!!

Fear (of change) is the Weakness my friends in Darker Times. The Puzzle will be solved as the New Dawn approaches that much I can tell. Sounds of a Playground Fading will Deliver Us from The Chosen Pessimist and Tilt the Liberation at Jester's Door Where the Dead Ships Dwell.

On first impressions it's certainly a decent album but almost all the songs become nullified by the great Reroute-y melodic leads and solo's frequently coming smack-band into contact with terrible chuggery-bits and Ander's dreary average vocals which are the equivalent of musical dust at times. 'Deliver Us' and 'A New Dawn' are currently the only standout tracks for me, the other tracks have some nice bits in but nothing to get too excited about. Might be worth revisiting a few times though because there are some nice moments to be had.

And don't ask me what The Jester's Door was about coz I ain't got a clue.

Third listen and it's not a bad album at all with a lot of growing potential. Well done In Flames. You aren't total failures.

Ropes, The Jester's Door and Liberation should have been left off the album. Liberation was a terrible song to finish off with. Anders trying to sing is rather embarrassing. I enjoyed it for the most part other than the 3 above songs.
