Deathcore Hybrid metalcore + melodic death metal - now there's a title that has a really negative stigma surrounding it amongst a large portion of the more discerning metal crowd. Now, normally, I'm against discarding an entire genre, but rather take my sweet time shitting on bands individually. However, considering The Black Dahlia Murder's strangle-hold on being probably the most popular band in the genre, I'm beginning to understand why people are afraid to approach deathcore metalcore + melodic death metal hybrids.

I don't like deathcore. This album is awesome! I like the excessive use of dual harmonies. Song writing here has definitely shown maturity compared to past albums.

Quote:
They have chugging riffs and they have breakdowns as well (but then again so has thrash and old school death metal) and as for metalcore you don't straight edge ideology for that or whiny lyrics. Loads of metalcore band (I am talking about what people call metalcore nowadays which really isn't metalcore tbh) don't have those at all.
TBDM are modern day metalcore or even Gothenburg, but do NOT dare call them melodic death metal cause they don't have anything that qualifies as that.

TBDM's qualifications for Melodic Death Metal: 1) it is a more melodic version of death metal. 2) TBDM follows a nearly identical formula as At The Gates. 3) Most of their influences are MDM. 4) They sound like MDM.

As for TBDM having breakdowns, they have like 3 that i know of and that is it; plus they are a completely different kind of breakdown then metalcore.

It's not a massive improvement over "Deflorate", but it certainly has moments of brilliance. The best songs here in my opinion are the ones which seem to depend on melodic leads and wonderfully crafted solos, such as 'Conspiring with the damned' and 'The window'. Other highlights for me are opener 'A shrine to madness' and 'Moonlight equilibrium'. Really glad I saw the band twice after they released this album, back in early 2012.

When I heard that they hired people to play strings and piano on this album I lost all hopes. But I was wrong, the violin fits very well and did not harm the usual potential of aggression one expects from TBDM.
