What defines Black Metal? What defines music as being avant-garde? Hell, I cannot pinpoint one specific musical trait that would answer those questions. On the other hand, I could play you the latest album from Sigh. That should take care of those annoying questions. Some say Sigh is not Black Metal anymore, in the form, they are right. But the intent, the root of their psycho music is the essence of Black Metal. I am talking about fear. Hangman's Hymn is downright scary.

Where to start?

"Hangman's Hymn" is probably one of the greatest releases in the genre of Black Metal since Mayhem's "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas". The concept of the album (from what I can tell) is about a criminal or extremely indulgent sinner's last thoughts and memories before the floor drops out from under him with a noose around his neck.

Rating: 9 I think one of the women on the inside artwork is Dr. Mikannibal.

Rating: 6 Thought I'd give Sigh another try today, as I've never really liked them in the past. Completely glad I did. Superb stuff in here

Other than 'Watershed' this is the only album I've ever been initially disappointed with but eventually saw my way to giving it a 10 in the end. Sigh's best album I would say. More bands need to incorporate leitmotifs. The idea of returning back to passages from previous songs really gives an album a sense of completion and of being unified.

Yeah they do.
NocturnalStalker - 08.09.2014 at 18:17
Rating: 9 How can you surprise your audience after releasing the album with hard rock/psychedelic rock sound and clean vocals? Sigh answered this question by turning the extremity to 100% and unleashing a beast of Wagnerian black metal. The result proved to be another one of the band's musical jewelry items.

Whoa, that was huge. This one has better flow than even their masterpiece Imaginary Sonicscape and only lacks on the variety front. But more than makes up for its amazing blackened thrash centered songwriting. Possibly my favourite release up to this point on their disco.
