Did they record all these songs with Anette vocals? Otherwise, I don't see any reason for such compilation.. except for money..

Well the boys, and the girl, decided to make a movie....well they lack a money to make one so they must do this kind of things just to cover the expenses....

I hope they'd be with Anette singing but I somewhat doubt because at least "The Phantom Of The Opera" is a song that Anette would most probably not perform. All in all I don't detect any Anette-era song in this tracklist which makes me fear that the management of the band is just trying to milk the Tarja-cow again.

Pf, whatever... I loved the band, but this is clearly aimed at making money, nothing more... Besides, none of these songs were recorded with Anette on vocals, so these guys should stop using Tarja's era to make money... You know, when you don't have a good singer anymore, you have to keep selling the old material...

Commercial purposes, evidently. I would probably buy this CD if it featured Anette as vocalist on EVERY song. So lame it does not...

yeah right... like Anette can do operatic singing.
She would hurt her voice trying -not to mention how it would destroy some good songs.

Unfortunatelly or not, Tarja was Nightwish's secret weapon. You like it or not. She was the something different from other female-vocal bands. Now tell me what's the difference between them and Sirenia for example? Only one decent female-vocal band still exist and they are Epica. Wtf with the pop singer in heavy metal groups anyway? They were the exception. They did't like having a most skilled singer and be able to perform songs that no other band could?

As for Annette... she would not perform "The Phantom of the Opera" because she CANNOT! It need balls to perform such a song. She could not even perform Nemo, Sleeping Sun, let alone Phantom.

Yeah the commercial side to this is quite evident. even moreso when the comp doesn't actually include their two BEST ballads: Creek Mary's Blood and Ghost Love Score. but then again they aren't as marketable as most of these 3-4 minute tracks.

Damn, I was hoping they were going to re-record all this stuff with Anette singing. These are all fantastic songs that are so amazingly written, but the operatic vocals really take away from the music, IMO.

Pop singer does not necessarily mean bad singer.

As far as I can tell, Anette hasn't been singing in pop acts before Nightwish. Her previous group's style was album oriented rock. I heard she has performed some ABBA songs too and well, ABBA is a classic band... yes, they were a pop band but this was the pop of the 70ies which cannot be compared to what is "pop" nowadays... ABBAs compositions ain't that easy to perform at all...

And yes, I don't see Anette singing POTO because it's made for a classical singer. Anette is not a classical singer, jazz and rock would suit her better, although with some training she'd probably perform classical singing as well.
Speaking of Nemo, Sleeping Sun and Walking In The Air, I think Anette does a fine job with these songs. Went to their last concert in Hartwall which was two years ago and they showed their highest class there. The Siren's new arrangement was particularly good not just because Anette filled the role of a siren very well but also the entire orchestral part was "updated" and the violinists solos boosted the performance. This live concert was better than any of those earlier live performances of Nightwish I had attended so far. Too bad they didn't make a DVD of this tho...

These were just examples...

AND... there is someone who sings The Phantom Of The Opera better than Tarja... It's Sarah Brightman... I'm glad I've seen her live on stage. Plus Tarja isn't the most outstanding classical rock/metal singer anyway... There are Lori Lewis and Melissa Ferlaak too who are very charismatic on stage and sound better (that's a matter of taste) for me than Tarja...

1. Didn't say that Tarja is THE best classical singer.
2. Pop singer as in she has a pop voice. And my point is that they had the opportunity to be different than a lot other bands. Whether you like it or not, Nightwish became the No1 female vocaled band because of their former singer just because she has some skills and was something original and well worked.
3. What is the song that made Nightwish famous to the non-metal fans? Phantom of the Opera. So... everyone expects them to perform it. It is a classical song, not easy to sing BUT they were a band able to do it and it had a taste of classical and heavy metal combined. How many bands can they do it and how many times would you hear it? I was lucky and saw Hollyhell performing it with Eric Adams.
4. Last but not least... you should have heard Annette performing on their first tour after she joined the band... Awful. She literally could not sing. Most of the tracks were unrecognizable. Nemo was something else. A song never heard of. She couldn't keep up with the melody and s out of tune... This was in Greece, a few months later they were in Brazil. The same senario and the crowd starting throwing stuff at them. Pitty we were not prepared with eggs and tomatoes. Paying 60 euros for something that was below average from a band of this magnitude was too much. You go to a concert and the support bands are performing extremely well and the headliners...

Is this Nemo??? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NZKOw1KPEI

When you speak of Deep Purple which singer comes in mind? Black Sabbath? Iron Maiden? Judas Priest? I believe you get my point ^^

I did hear... in fact their first concert with Anette was a success... of course there was at least one person who had to say that Nightwish without Tarja is "the worst effing horse-shit evah!" but apart from that it was a success...

I have to admit the band sounded a bit tired during a concert in Helsinki I visited in 2008... After all the pace was big and they didn't have that much time to rest but still they managed to make the audience glad...

But by the 2009 Hartwall concert they were in top-shape...
And I still must admit that "Walking In the Air" and "Sleeping Sun" are very beautiful songs and Anette manages to give them some emotional warmth a bit more than Tarja who does sound a bit too academic at some places. Not to mention that her voice has been changing considerably since earlier times...

Returning to their beginning of the tour...

I bet Nightwish had nothing to do with this release anyway. All of the songs are from the Spinefarm era, nothing from the Nuclear Blast albums. Just sounds like the record company needing the money from a successful band they lost the contract of.

Yes i also think so. On their official site (Nightwish) there is no such album.

I see no sense in this album. Nightwish have beautiful ballads, but in one album?! It's boring!! I don't understand, why Nightwish record this. I think only for money...

Tarja was their secret weapon????????????!!!!!!!!!!!! jajajajajaja Nightwish is and will ALWAYS be (MOSTLY) Toumas. Tarja is NOT and was NEVER the best operatic- metal feminine voice (neither Simone Simons). study actual opera and you'll see for yourself that this metal opera singer don't stand a chance against the real ones (I'm not saying that i don't like this kind of bands. i love them). there are 2 singers that in fact do real opera sometimes and are/were better than Tarja and those are: Nicole Bogner (ex singer of Visions of Atlantis) and Floor Jansem from After Forever. there's this one from Diablo swing Orchestra that in fact do opera.

I really don't know when people will grasp the fact that opera in metal is very childish. it's a disgrace for real opera altho i admit that Toumas used Tarja's voice perfectly. but i bet he came to realize my point so he decided to search something no operatic.

.
I agree that the opera in in metal is so childish, especially the one simone from Epica uses, yes it's true the only thing has happened is that Tarja's voice has been perfectly used in Nightwish, but doesn't make her an opera singer, although she's much better than the disaster simone is, cause at least Tarja could perform live much better than many other so called opera singers in metal, and also I agree one of the only opera singers in metal is the one in DSO.
