Plaguewielder saw the band starting to emerge from the malaise of the late 90s (ugh to Total Death) and prior to the punk injection of their more recent releases. For the most the approach is their style of black metal, only with punchier production than in the past. Perhaps the fact it doesn't sound like it was recorded by a Fisher Price "My First Microphone" and feature one of the band members dressed in corpsepaint and snarling at Alpha Centauri on the cover is why it doesn't get the run that their older output does.

Weeeee just received the reissued, re-artworked version from Peaceville, along with commentary from Nocturno Tedo and Fenriz.

Dear Darkthrone, I hope you release a commentary boxset one day, because I'm not gonna buy every album again.

wow you have this a 6 and Ravishing Grimness a 10? I always thought they were very similar albums (In the commentary, they refer to the two as brother albums) - only i thought this one better formulated and executed.

i can see folks preferring the other one, but that strongly was a bit eyebrow raising.

For sure. I prefer Ravishing Grimness myself, but this album isn't that different. Describing them as brother albums is definitely accurate, as the older one seems to make his mistakes but it gives him character and experience which the younger brother tries to learn from but has his own issues.

Subtle as they may be, I suppose those differences are drastic for some.

I guess, to use your analogy, this was the ugly sister of Ravishing Grimness, who wasn't exactly a looker herself.

The way I see Darkthrone is everything between Transylvianian Hunger and Sardonic Wrath is a radioactive wasteland that should be avoided at all costs. Panzerfaust might have been ok if it wasn't for the overly mixed, almost sidechained vocals.

Exactly. And as a big fan of Darkthrone, I agree with that, although I enjoyed Hate Them.

Hate Them is probably my favorite.

from my perspective, i didn't like the last couple tracks of Transylvanian Hunger, nor Panzerfaust and Total Death. Ravishing Grimness was them starting to pull up from the free fall, with this album continuing the ascent towards Hate Them on...

(And I also see Hate Them and Sardonic Wrath as brother albums as well... )

I actually just listened to a couple of tracks off Hate Them and I appear to have remembered it incorrectly as it does indeed sound remarkably similar to Sardonic Wrath. Time to revisit it then it seems.

Another good Darkthrone album which although offers few surprises, has plenty to indulge in for those who are big fans (like moi). Opener 'Weakling avenger' has a good Punk vibe running throughout and 'Raining murder' and the epic 'I, voidhanger' both prove to be staples of Darkthrone's trademark sound.

This is actually way better than expected. I bought this album AGES ago (roughly 4 years ago) and today is the first time I give it a proper listening. It's hella catchy and the production gives it plety of oomph. There's nothing particularly deep to say about this album... It's just solid black metal with great no-bullshit riffs. Nothing like their classic stuff but still solid. I'm gonna listen to that commentary now. I'm curious xD

Sorry, but I will never understand people who buy albums just to gather dust on the shelves. And in some cases they don't even remove the foil from it

I do listen to all the albums I buy. Or at least I plan to! Problem is that I buy at a faster rate than I listen to them. The first time I try to just listen to an album and do close to nothing else.
During the week it's hard for me to find the time to sit back a full hour just listening to an album. I really should stop buying albums until I can catch up (of the 850+ albums I own I have roughly 70 albums I need to listen hahahaha).

I don't blame you. Having such a large collection as yours it's physically impossible to listen to everything. That's why I prefer quality over quantity.

I like to think 90% of my albums are great though The rest might be just for collection sake. Although I've been thinking about giving away some of my cds as soon as I get around to go through them all and seen what I can do without so I can have place for better stuff.

Ok. I'm now going through your collection and indeed most of it looks pretty impressive... I wish I had as big budget as yours!
