Deathcore for dance clubs, eh?

No, wait! Don't go! Keep reading!

My uncanny lvl. 68 telepathy skill tells me that a lot of people are going to hate this album. Deathcore haters almost certainly will. Same with those fanatical electro purists you encounter on your internet radio site of choice (you know, the "Skrillex = homostep" guys). Take some pretty simple techno tunes and mix them with some pretty generic deathcore, and that's a solid enough description of The Browning's new album. Commencing back pat right now.

Woohoo!!! Can't wait for this release. Best Trancecore band out there imo...I wonder if Standing and Time are the same as the EPs or if they changed them up at all...

Rating: 7 Trance is about the only electronic genre I personally cannot stand. However this turns out to be a decent and interesting mix. Going with a 7 so far, but if it ages well, I might even go higher.

To be honest, I actually agree to some extent. Don't like this band and their blend of trance and metal. I'm not too optimistic about it's prospects in general either. Having said that, I still find it better than MA's latest. That one was just a rude shock to my system.

That one was just a rude shock to my system.

I think that's what makes this album even worse for me. I heard over and over about how bad the latest MA was, and then I checked it out and realized the majority was right.

Then I see a positive review for this, positive YOUTUBE comments (which don't hold any merit I know, but still), and then our own ruthless MS users whispering sweet nothings on the album thread.

Then I checked it out and just fucking laughed. I honestly can't see how anyone sees anything good in this. I mean I despise the latest CoB and My Dying Bride and a lot of other crap, but I can still understand why some people might like those albums...but not this. It's arguably worse than that stupid Eternal September band or whatever that I reviewed back in the day.

[sarcasm font]Maybe if you guys would get your trve kvlt heads out of your frostbitten asses, you'd realize that this is a genius album. An eclectic mix of styles that at first seems to lack cohesion, but ends up being a brilliant display of what the future of extreme music could hold. Close minded haters are close minded.[/sarcasm font]

Actually not as bad as I thought it was gonna be. Not a huge fan of all the electronica stuff but I still find it to be pretty decent.

QFT.
I gave it a 4... and after more listens I gave it a 3. I don't think it'll go lower because when they are not trying to be metal there are some half-baked decent/mediocre trance that saves this piece of shit from being a 2 for me. I wouldn't give it a 1 though... "worst ever" is too much of a title just as much as a perfect 10. I'm yet to listen to something so offensive to earn a 1.

Avoid like the plague, indeed.

I don't like dance music at all, but from the scathing comments Ive seen here and in the review thread, I was expecting far worse. It's not my thing at all really, but if that song is an indicator of the whole album's sound, then giving it a 1 would be overly harsh. Even Waking The Cadaver's horrendous debut would get a 2 from me, or a 3 if I was being very generous, and this isn't quite as bad as that!

Hmm.. maybe compared to WTC's 2nd album, which while still far from great was quite a bit better than the debut, it's worse. But WTC's debut is one of the worst albums I've ever heard. Okay, the only Anal Cunt album I've heard was even worse, but I don't even think that's meant to be music, so I'm not sure if I should count that...
Marcel Hubregtse - 11.10.2011 at 13:32

Rating: 6 If you took away the -core aspects of this, which are wholly incompatible with everything else, this would be pretty listenable on a cheese-fest level. Far from the worst thing ever though.

Stick with HORSE The Band in the future though, similar in many ways but far better.

Pwahahaha!!! I posted the exact video in the funny stuff from the internet section. I guess everyone has their own tastes in "music". If you want good integration of electronic and core I strongly suggest listening to Heaven Shall Burn instead of this Browning piece.
midland_don - 14.10.2011 at 14:27
When it gets going, this isn't sooooooo bad. But TBH the breakdowns really are the most annoying thing. They ruin most of the songs... too many of them and too boring. Reminds me of when I was forced to stand through a set by Unearth to hear Chimaira aftwerwards, f**king awful...
The Benighted - 16.10.2011 at 23:31
Rating: 5 They're called 'The Browning'? lmao. In any event, the two genres just don't work well together here. Blood Stain Child manages to mix death metal and techno, so I know it works. They just need to find a good balance...and maybe change their name.

I think this could have been half decent if deathcore elements were replaced with death metal. Would have been a nice change from generic plastic modern DM (and still better than MA ). Some of the keyboard parts are actually catchy... but it ends up being shit with all the rest.

Ya know, come to think of it, this album kinda makes sense... Deathcore is in some ways extreme metal's form of dance music, with so much emphasis put on breakdowns that serve no other purpose than to get teenagers fuckin shit up in da pit. Combining breakdowns with electronic dance music elements seems only natural, although the quality, or lack of, is questionable...

AA is shit too.
There is a difference, Troy. You are wrong about BMTH. They have never put emphasis on electronic parts. In fact I only remember few moments from that album to have some electronic stuff but not enough to stop calling them for what they are: Just deathcore. I do remember their second album had one bonus cd containing a remix dubstep version of the album but that's about it. Doesn't really count because it's just an alternative version of the album, not the original sound.

I can totally understand that everyone despise BMTH and I actually agree with almost all of them. For some reason still unknown to me, I like them even though I deeply dislike them as artists for the stupid interviews I've read. Probably the only "guilty pleasure" I ever had as I'm usually a shamless bastard when it comes to music.
While I do understand the "why the hell do you like them"-question... I don't understand your question as they definitely don't play the same thing as AA and the browning.

check "invictus"

I honestly can't recall much electronics on Invictus aside from the trance elements in Combat. But it is not my most played HSB disc so I might be wrong, maybe this is a divine sign that I need to spin it again!

On topic, for the first time ever I listened fully through this album. I was surprised. Pleasantly.

I really do not understand the huge negative backlash this album is generating.
I like good deathcore and bad deathcore is mainly bad because it is just absofuckinglutely boring. It often ha a good rythmic structure not so surprising seeing how much deathcore concentrates on rhythm but those long ass slow and heavy breakdowns are not filled with anything. And it makes it boring since you cannot make enjoyable music out of rhythmic elements alone (and breakdowns ARE rhythmic elements).

What this band does is to fill in the lack of leads with synths which prevents it from getting boring the same way I described above. It is a logical step since deathcore, as a whole is characterised by a really strong rhythmic base, and the electronic genres used on this album have much more interesting melodies than their repetative beats.

Personally I don't see anything wrong with that since synths are just as music as leads are so I don't care if it lacks good leads if the synths compensate for it well enough which they do.

Still, the album does suffer from being a bit stale in the long run.

Now what I can't decide is if I should rate this with a 6 or a 7.

I understand if people like it... but I think it's hella easy to understand why someone would hate this as well. I'm gonna steal something that Joe said:

Quote:

I'm a bit more critical about it than Joe but the content it's actually the same: The deathcore parts suck and do not mix that well with trance (or whatever people want to call it). The electronic stuff is just in the ok area. Combined... It just sounds wrong to me. Might give it another listening just beause I'm a masochistic idiot though.
