The defendant rose; his face a blank expression. His lawyer had a concerned look about him. The whole courtroom seemed to be frozen in time. The judge took no joy in delivering the verdict. A weak voice to match his scrawny body slowly spelling it out: "The defendant has been found guilty of musical oversight." You get the picture; I miss the boat on this release. I got so used to hear Paradise Lost experiment with their sound in the early nineties I almost forgot how awesome their song writing can be when applied to good old heavier Gothic Metal era Draconian Times. So my self-inflicted sentencing is to listen to their latest offering until I weep. The only problem is that I keep weeping of joy and I cannot stop listening to this album. Tragic Idol blew my mind from the first note to the last. Whatever was lost about this heavenly band has been fully recovered.

Tragic Idol is Paradise Lost's 13th full-length release…yes you read right 13! This prolific band just keeps on getting better with every release. I had the pleasure of witnessing their live performance at this years Soundwave Festival, they were fantastic with ever song they had the power of an extremely young band but the musicianship of an extremely grown and mature band, they are one of the most under-rated bands in the metal scene, they deserve to be as big as Metallica. The reason why I believe they have stayed so consistently great, is due to the fact their line-up has basically never changed, apart from the drummer who has changed several times, this allows them to have such a musical connection that can progress in such a way that a band with many line-up changes just can not. However this is not to say that a band without line-up changes will stay consistently good, there are a lot of examples that I could mention however I will not in this review.

Should be enjoyable as usual, a good Christmas present in 2112. (Edit: original release date was near Christmas)
Wondering if Greg's work in Vallenfyre delays the release of the paradise lost album. Don't take me wrong, I prefer records that aren't rushed.

Rating: 10 In my estimation, It will be released way before December 2012. Next summer is the most likely date, I believe.

What is this?

According to the band's official forum they entered the studio in August to work on their next album. They're doing a big tour in 2012 so it will probably be released in the latter half of the year.

(Just responding to your delete_me edit in case my rejection didn't send you a PM.)

The video for Honesty in Death is awesome. This one will be a great album.
garmling - 14.04.2012 at 14:42
Rating: 9 It is very good album with few twists here and there....every song has something of their own which is something I missed on their previous album...there are songs that stands on their own and are really really good! to name the few, "Fear of Impending Hell" (a sort of ballad, with great sad melodies), "Solitary One" (a opener with some haunting piano tones), "Theories From Another World" (a really heavy one, whit some DM riffs, Vallenfyre anyone) or beautifully crafted "Worth Fighting For"...overall a solid 9 for me, the only complaint goes that some songs ends abruptly when I hoped for some promising transition...
Kenos - 14.04.2012 at 19:58
The album is very solid and deserves my 7/10, but it's simply not as good as the wonderful "Faith".
jesusbl - 15.04.2012 at 18:18
Rating: 9 This disc if the height of his great works of the 90's, the sound "Icon" is evident here, hardness, melancholy and atmospheres to create a record that will become a classic. The difference with this is that it has soul and songs that pass to the group's history. "Solitary One" "Fear of impending Hell" "Honesty in Death" "Tragic Idol" "Theories From Another World" or "To the Darkness" sound like the best times of Paradise Lost. 9 / 10
JohnDoe - 15.04.2012 at 19:24
How come people have or listen to this, apparently is not out yet for another week?! or has it leaked already?
jesusbl - 15.04.2012 at 20:42
Rating: 9 It leaked on Friday except the songs of the limited edition

well they had a couple of great tracks on the previous album as well so for me it wouldn't be that surprising. Hence I thought you meant what I posted.

I should probably give that one a closer listen too, I think I heard some tracks off it but not much more than that. Judging by this album it would probably be well worth it.
JohnDoe - 22.04.2012 at 00:29
A good album, the previous album was much better though; I gotta give this more listens, see how it goes.
Kenos - 22.04.2012 at 16:04
Ah, damn. It's getting worse and too predictable with every listen. "Faith" was brillant and varied, this one is becoming flat, the refrains sound so samey... 6,5/10.

jesusbl - 24.04.2012 at 19:12
Rating: 9 It is the best album of Paradise Lost in 1995, practically all the songs are great, Greg plays the guitar like never before, the voice of Holmes fabulous. The perfect union of "Icon" to "Draconian Times". Record of the Year

The song "Ending Through Changes" should appear among the best in "Tragic Idol" not as a mere "bonus track".

That's the thing... I makes me think of both artists but I do not see how he combined the styles in a good way.

Well, I never said I thought the Nile one is a masterpiece. It was "just good" but sadly it gets dissapointing once you see all the bad stuff about it (specially the fucked up lights and copy-paste shit)... It gets most of my liking in a "it could have been great" level... With the Latest Paradise Lost, even from the beginnign I didn't like it. I still don't know why I don't dig the drawning that much. Like I said before, it's like a dude took great influences from the artist behind the latest Blut Aus Nord + Baizley stuff and was going to make something awesome yet something got lost in the translation.

I was saying it gets worse the more you look at it, and then you take a turn in checking out their other covers and notice the same thing always sticking out that is Photoshop. The last solo Karl Sanders album cover was TENFOLD GREATER looking than it. With that aside, Tragic Idol is simply an Art Nouveau, nothing at all like the Baizley stuff and never meant to be. If anything it's this style that Baizley's influenced by and Tragic Idol is Art Nouveau as it's original classic look. If anything Tragic Idol takes from it looks like Endtyme by Cathedral.
