This is quite peace of work by early Dimmu Borgir. It is perfect mix of melodic/symphonic keyboards and black metal riffs that make this album one of few that you can listen from beguing to the wery end.
Definitelly must listen to....

Every band has to start somewhere. And dimmu borgir, as evident on this album, prove as no exception. Its not essential (The vocals and the bass are the weakest points here by a mile) but the melodies and the songwriting prove as a warning of how great the band's talent would become in later years. Ill still listen to this in the future, because it is good, just not that good.

Ya I used to be a big trve kvltkid, thought it was kewl to praise this and hate on their symphonic stuff... Then I realized I didn't actually like this album, simply because it's a really dull, generic brand of lo-fi black metal. And a lot of their later material put this to shame.

I find it hard to read comments like yours, I'm glad you're honest with yourself, but when you described this album as 'dull' it made me realise you're in the wrong place, you should be listening to something like Marduk, who specialise in brutality, rather than atmosphere, etc. This is for lovers of mainly ambient/symphonic black, which is maybe why you didn't like it?

Actually I prefer DB to Marduk and atmo-black is probably my favorite genre of metal.
FAT just isn't really a good showcase for that kind of music. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's bad. Just...average. The pros don't outweigh the cons and vice-versa.

You were just itching to call it FAT, weren't you?

At first I just didn't wanna type it out in full and then I was like...nice, I get to call it fat.
Somewhat guilty.

... thundercunt reviews - dimmu borgir - for all tid
aight, sos what we got here is a oldass black metal album, one a the ones from back in the early 90s, but it a lil different from it peers
what differenshiate this album from the rest of it time is it symphony style
like it aint all hardcore evil black metal, buzzsaw riffs n all dat
it got shit like piano and ambiance
songs don jus blast off on a get-go, them take time ta work up a lil sumn sumn
a course, it old school, so they sound aint da best, but gitars on dis one are key
shit be melodical and fantastical, like some narnia shit
but then dis cat start wit his vocal, they be all gargle scream things
right evil shit day scare a playa like me, makin me check my closet n unda mah bed fo i go ta sleep at night
some brothas might not like dat bad producing, ya dig
they be lookin for sumn like a new satyricon album, where all instruments be heard rill clear
and that fine, aint a playa gon hate on em fo it
i jus sayin this album here ain like dat, and you gotta train yo ear a lil to pick errthang out proper
now it aint all unis and rainbow here, this album got a lil weakness to it
fo starter, tha song takin too long to do sumn
feelin like hours goin by and i still sittin right hurr listnin to da same riff
only time a brotha know a album ain skippin is when dis cat start bustin out the clean vocal
fo it time this debut be pretty good, standin out a lil from tha rest
but shit also don compare rill good ta some a tha otha albums round da same time
like who else be round at dis time, i talkin emperor and burzum, mayhem n more
so at tha enda tha day, shit ain so good, but it ain rill bad neitha

I dig this album more than most other Dimmu albums just because of how it suits my tastes a bit more than their later material which is watered down and too overproduced. I used to like Stormblast more, however over time i heard nearly every part of that album in other black metal songs that came out before it so i realized that it was kinda a rip off of other stuff. Anyways this is some of their best work (minus Enthrone Darkness Triumphant).
