Way better than the previous, but not good. The only song here that I at least enjoy is Chelsea Smile. Syke's vocals are too... "teen".

Don;t see why this album is hated so much. I mean, the only negative thing that stands out to me is the vocals, which aren't that bad anyway. When Sykes screams or roars properly he brings out a great voice. The two tracks that last around a minute aren't really necessary in my opinion and seem to cut the flow a bit, but 'The comedown', 'Chelsea smile' and the title track are all very solid.

I have to admit this album was very listenable back in the day when I used to like this kind of stuff.

'I'll-cut-my-wrist" teenager lyrics, Awful vocalist, uninspired and generic breakdowns, weird electro elements... that's all I could remember.

Edit: I see you really like this album. Wel, I'm NOT trying to gain some kvlt points here

Awful vocalist

I don't get why everybody is coming up with this. I do not even like Sykes' vocals that much on this album (unlike the other three) but from a technical point of view he is an excellent vocalist, possessing a very wide range as well as good command of multiple vastly different vocals styles and the ability to switch between them at a whim. He is definitely NOT an awful vocalist.

This is the only BMTH album I don't really like but still lately I've been digging the shit out of the title track. It is an excellent composition of Devil Sold His Soul-esque post-metalcore and has one of the best whispered vocal parts I have ever heard in music. Oh yeah vocals once again.

I also dislike the lyrics here but they aren't really cut-your-wrist teenager lyrics, they are mostly about suicides or suicide attempts in the band members' vicinity/social circles. Which is not the same thing.

Just one important question, sir. What would be an awful vocalist, from your side of the view?

Saetia's vocalist for example.

I don't tend to slag him because for the type of music Saetia plays (old school screamo), being an awful vocalist actually often helps (makes the music sound more visceral and distraught) but his scream vocals are amateurish and he often hits the wrong notes while singing.

Many other vocalists from the "scene" metalcore scene are pretty bad. They often have good harsh vocals but they cannot sing for shit so they have to autotune it up to eleven. Just take a look at Asking Alexandria or We Came As Romans (after their first album, the clean vocals on the first were also beefed up but they were relatively decent).

Oliver Sykes, is however, NOT an awful vocalist at any measure .

Checked those dudes. Saetia's vocalist is pretty awful but AA's vocalist isn't so bad, the type of music they do is, though.

I like Danny's screams in Alexandria, but seriously he cannot sing for shit. His cleans are better on their last album though but that is even worse than their back catalogue cause at least Stand Up And Scream could be enjoyed for being dumb and catchy but their third is just a bland imitation of 80s metal that I don't like in the first place.

Anyways, the point of my posts here is to say that a vocalist CAN be good without liking their vocals and vice versa.

I don't like Oliver on THIS album (but I do like his vocals on every other BMTH album) but he is technically proficient. At the same time Billy (Saetia) sucks ass as a vocalist but I still like his vocals because they fit the music extremely well (imagine the difference between power metal and black metal production values. If a PM album was produced like an Emperor album it would suck but it fits Emperor's music).

As someone put it in a very negative troll review of Periphery on sputnikmusic (which I don't agree with but still was funny) "he can hit the notez but the notes themselves are gay".

LOL This dude spent some time listening to Anal Cunt (Ah, yeah... Seth Putnam vocals are terrible but they do fit the music, I understood what you said )

Well, this was the only BMTH album I've fully listened, the other just some samples or few songs, but definitely his vocals are better on this than their debut... I think Metalcore/Deathcore is NOT my type of music.

Overrwatcher

Of the three modern metalcore pioneer albums (this, and the debuts from the two AA's), this is by far the best of them and the only one I would even consider to be even half-decent. No shitty autotune, no random trancecore moments, no crabcore, and an actual sense of viciousness. It's scene /wrists melodrama mixed in with some genuine fun but the music itself really isn't bad. Oli has an impressive range despite royally fucking up his voice earlier, and it still carries the deathcore influences from their previous album. The songs don't have a massive identity crisis unlike Asking Alexandria's music, they carry a good sense of weight and avoid cleans unless it really really fits. The entire thing in general is very crunchy and satisfying. It's still immature as hell, but at least they can play decently.

This segment of the title track right up (until the guitars end) is by far my favorite moment in all of metalcore, old and new.
