With Katatonia's follow-up to 2009's Night Is The New Day, Dead End Kings continues the trend starting with that album, or arguably even The Great Cold Distance, and focuses on a mellow, atmospheric sound that encompasses the overall feel of the record. This direction for the band may have perhaps stemmed from lead singer Jonas Renkse having to take control over a bulk of the songwriting after guitarist Anders Nyström suffered a case of writer's block during the previous album's recording sessions; Nyström was nevertheless able to contribute to this album. While Night Is The New Day indeed succeeded with this initial goal of emphasizing atmosphere over aggression, Katatonia continued to improve upon this style for their next record, and the result is a much more united and consolidated effort.

Katatonia by the end of world
Troy Killjoy - 03.11.2011 at 06:36
They don't need to bring back teh graowlz. They just need more cowbell.
Ankläger - 15.11.2011 at 04:05
Screw the growls, and screw the cowbell.
I'd be happy with some actual metal.

(how can graowlz be kvlt? I thought they should be br00tuhl... guess I'm totally out of the loop)

Rating: 9 I really liked NItND, so I am really looking forward to this release. What I really hope is more heavy awesomeness combined with thrilling, atmospherical parts like I found in "Departer" especially the part from 2:50 to 3:10. I'm hoping Jonas will experience a bit more with his voice like that. I really liked it.

Rating: 9 I am very much looking forward to this release! I will have plenty of time to absorb it before I head up to Los Angeles on September 8 to see the songs performed live (as well as the first time I ever see the band live). It should be absolutely breathtaking.

Btw, just heard the new single, "Dead Letters", and it is a truly amazing song. This album is going to be incredible, I just know it.

Rating: 8 It's ridiculous that you have to pay almost four times more to gain the bonus tracks. That makes me consider the option of not buying this album.

"The dead end king is here... Black wings upon his back."

(To all Katatonia's fans: brace yourselves for The Racing Heart...)
Waniyetu - 27.06.2012 at 17:58
This album is going to be astounding, I'm sure. Katatonia has had a continuous sense of growth and direction in their career and, judging from Dead Letters and how much of a masterpiece their last release was, well, needless to say, this is going to be killer too. August 28th couldn't come soon enough!
Argônio - 01.07.2012 at 16:32
Rating: 10 "Dead letters" is truly astonishing song. It gives me a good impression of the awaited album. Seems like they gonna use more prog elements.

Come faster August 27th!

Great album. Best song is The Racing Heart, what an ending! Also loved The Parting, Undo You, Buildings, First Prayer, and Lethean. Worst 2 songs are Dead Letters and The One You are Looking For is Not Here.
Diksy - 15.08.2012 at 18:25
Just heard the album. As I said before, they won't disappoint and they didn't. It's an awesome album.. at least I like it, much.
Almost same as the guy who commented before, I liked The Parting, Lethean, First Prayer, Ambitions, Hypnone, and Buildings too. Also, I don't think "The One You Are Looking For is Not Here" is so bad.

What a yawn. The first track fulfills my expectations: soulless, sterile, uninteresting, devoid of lead guitar melodies, formulaic chorus. Bleh.
Therapy? - 25.08.2012 at 17:05
Rating: 9 Got the ltd. deluxe edition in my posession already My shop had the launch date incorrect or something so they sent it earlier. It's awesome!

Like I said earlier, it's everything I expected. Jonas is even more diverse with his voice which is what I wanted to hear. The music itself is one continuous flow of awesome, mixing mellow, almost peaceful parts of music with more heavy parts. It's just missing a nice growl here and there. Hence a nine.
Fredd - 26.08.2012 at 14:28
Rating: 8 I R DISAPPOINT. Some good moments especially on the second half of the album, but below my expectations overall.

I'll see you there I saw Katatonia + Opeth last year and Katatonia literally made me shit my Pants! Insanely anxious to hear what they have to offer their fans this time. I like 'Night is the New Day', but it honestly could have been much more

Are you as excited as i am for the rest of the show? Townsend + Paradise Lost
