They're baaaaaaaaack! Put on your battle armor Ahab and Esoteric, because funeral doom titans Evoken have returned and they're ready for war with yet another excellent contribution to the overlooked style from which they come. Apparently Atra Mors is the 100th album to be released on Profound Lore Records, and a fantastic celebration of such an event it is indeed.

Must say I'm still not completely sold on this band or album. They're the definition of consistency, and I certainly appreciate how this album is both solid and dynamic. But compared to some of the other extreme doom albums this year (Faal, Profetus and Monolithe especially) there's that certain something missing. A feeling, an atmosphere, not sure what it is.

I think it's missing the creativness that those other have. This feel kinda like cookie cutter funeral doom.

It's still fantastic though, even in its lack of originality.

Brutally wonderful and mournfully inspiring album, it I may say so. Evoken, as always, play a very well-balanced kind of funeral doom/death metal and do it quite skillfully too. One a few bands in this sub-genre manage to get my attention and Evoken is surely one of them.

This is their worst effort to date. it gets dull and boring at times. I never get scary about any album i listen to, even i must say there is no music that can change my mood. I can listen to funeral doom and being in a good mood and music dont make me feel miserable or sad. There must be something wrong with me :/

I'm one of the few that sees this as there best. The emotions through the reverbing psych melodies and the unpredicted tempo shifts to the crying guitars carry this output as dimensions of layers above the themes of the previous tones refining them into one.

Another extremely rare quality to me was its effective use of dynamics which are usually remembered by crap mainstream reunion albums, yet of course, it's a funeral doom album that changes my mind, intentionally swaying you across bend after bend to literally hit you.

The art and purple with black marble haze vinyl release alone trumps Evoken's catalog. Into Aphotic Devastation's hypnotic breakdown melody into the psych cadence puts me to tears.

I may not have the largest collection but I certainly have the absolute best
