The songwriting is really solid, but the melodies don't really strike me as creative...they sound like they were just following a few notes up and down a scale.

Best Ahab album for me.

*gasp* Blasphemy.
Literally anything else they did is better than this one... It's still a great release, but the post-metal influences are way too big on this album and does not suit them.

Their first albums are kind of boring sometimes.. I agree with what JOOE said:

Hugely enjoyable album. Definitely not as pure-post as I thought it would be (or as much as others are suggesting). Generally some very spacey and melodic music with a nice doom vein running through it. The clean vocals are particularly excellent, as are the growls, however though the weird gargling bellows on the second track are horrific and embarrassing. That aside though, extremely competent record, certainly nothing awkward or forced about it at all, very confident sounding melding of post and doom.

I also find it much more interesting that TCOTWS which bores me.

...Boring? BORING?!?!

Yeah, I'll just drop the conversation because it's clear we are having a completely different experience with Ahab. Their debut, which they have never been able to top, is to me one of the finest examples of the genre with excellent production, songwriting that is always intriguing and building tension and overall a veyr unique atmosphere. Wouldn't be shy on putting it in a top 20 if not 10 of best albums of the genre. For further detail I'll reference the two great reviews by older staffers Doc and Der.

I'd just like to say that I am not the only one who shares this opinion, there are plenty. I knew I was going to get smashed by saying this.

Also, I love this album a lot

"Plenty"?
Trust me VIG, .... Just a quick glance on the doom metal scene and you'll find out you are a minority on this one.
I disagree with Marcel regarding Joe's tastes. He did have a blind spot on a few cases like this one though.

Don't actually remember anything about this album to be honest. I might give it another spin soon, though I'm not expecting it to top The Call Of The Wretched Sea or The Boats Of The Glen Carrig.

I have to agree with the others.. This one is by far their weakest. Even though I'm a big Post-Metal fan.

This may be their weakest effort, but it's still a damn fine album.
