Monolithe hail from France and they consist of members of Anthemon, The Old Dead Tree, Despond etc and as you might have guessed from their name they play ultra slow, heavy and powerful at the same time music. Funeral doom is what Monolithe play, but they don't move in the nightmarish paths of this genre, they prefer to dwell in its most depressive and bittersweet soundscapes and they succeed into making the listener surrender in his own esoteric world of bleeding emotions.

I checked Monolithe out around the time the third album came out but I remember almost nothing about it. Finally diving into their discography in order to get pumped for next month's Dutch Doom Days. Monolithe are headlining the second day. I bought The Great Clockmaker wooden boxet with the first 4 album plus the compilation of EPs from that period.

It's quite fascinating how this instantly made me think of the cosmos. The twin-guitar melodies most be the main reason. The album takes a little bit to gain proper momentum but it's easy to get sucked in after a few minutes. It just keeps growing. It made me think of Esoteric quite a bit too. But I think the psychedelic elements are used in a different way. Unlike Esoteric's branch of nightmare-fueled hallucinations, Monolithe's vibe is more grand, mysterious and beautiful. I'm very intrigued and I'm happy I'm finally giving these guys a proper listening after so long.

Ugly cover art. However, very good doom! As was said in the review thread, the album starts getting truly intriguing after the 10 minute mark.

I like the use of keyboards and the overall grandiose atmosphere

The re-issue artworks for their old stuff do the muic justice though!
Excellent band. Dive into them chronologically! Fascinating evolution. Do not forget the EPs!
