The Benighted

This is a beast of an album. Imagine a definitive follow up to 'Court in the Act' with a modern production job and you're on the right track. Quality-wise I doubt anything will trump this in the heavy metal scene this year.

Angel Witch can learn a thing or two by listening to this album. Now, this is how you make a reunion album after so many years and not like that thing Angel Witch unleashed on the world.

Sounds good.

I got to check out late as number of albums were in pipeline but when this scooped up, it sounds amazing.

Court in the act for me still a better record in comparison to this.

This is one boss album. There need to be more NWOBHM bands coming back with awesome shit.

Which is probably why I've always found this album to be quite boring. Really says a lot about a genre when one has to regurgitate the same sound in order to be considered decent. Move on, do new things, take some risks. Be relevant, or at the very least: interesting.

Kinda helps if you've never been crazy about their early stuff to begin with. CITA was modest, but nothing to write home about.

That being said, I much prefer this. Definitely the band's best.

IMO this kind of stuff is not about innovation.

It's about writing some cool tunes that sound reasonably fresh and have memorable hooks.

Doesn't sound fresh to me. Sounds pretty stale.

Sounds like some good tunes, memorable hooks. That's fresh in itself.

By the way why do you care? You hate this kind of music in the first place - you even have no time for genre originators ala Iron Maiden at the peak of their creative career when they were "fresh, innovative, blah, blah."

It's kinda like me commenting on that crud BM bollocks Deathspell Omega.

I don't enjoy Iron Maiden, ergo I hate heavy metal? I do love a logical fallacy early in the morning

It's not really the same as that DsO fiasco because my comment actually holds a semblance of truth and isn't me flailing wildly in the dark: this is a repackaging of an older sound and little more, no new ideas or anything - you said it yourself, it sounds like 1987. If someone enjoys if for that then good for them, but I don't for that very reason (and because guy's voice is pretty hideous); that's my opinion. Doesn't mean I don't like the genre though and you're kidding yourself if you think not liking this negates any and all interest in heavy metal, it just means I don't lap up everything that has nostalgia as its only strong point.

Same as "DSO Fiasco," I've not noted any love for traditional heavy metal from you at all. By the looks of it you don't listen to any of it whatsoever other than "underground scene approved" Slough Feg.

Liking or not liking is not the issue here, or has ever been anywhere else. It's about actually showing you understand a medium or genre and making points appropriate to that, instead of making an arse of yourself with poorly constructed analyses that misrepresent the genre, band or listeners in question, which is where this and the DsO / Katatonia issues diverged. You need to stop concerning yourself with what (you think) I like and don't like, because using that alone as the entire basis of your arguments is not conducive to quality discussion. As you've pointed out elsewhere if you can't handle my opinion and tastes then don't forum, because it leads to nonsense like this:

(great band but I doubt you'd like them if they were more popular)

Please, this is entry-level keyboard warrior, desperate one-up-manship behaviour that I'm not even going to bother giving a response to. I would have thought comments like this were beneath even you. I guess not.

Luckily Underground Hipster Joe understands all genres and will tell us what is good.

He understands all genres including ones he doesn't listen to ala NWOBHM, Speed Metal, Thrash Metal etc etc.

Life Sentence is a great album for us that actually listen to this genre, just like your black metal stuff is good for your lot.

I don't care that you don't like this - that's your prerogative.

It amuses me you spouting bullshit about progression when you don't understand the genre or the market segment at all and don't even appreciate the key bands in the genre.

Oh and I enjoy seeing you engage in absolute hypocrisy and then turn out to be a clueless tool (just like I did that DSO).

let the bile flow through you. Maybe they should introduce some new angry emoticons on MS after all, might save on some writing on your part.

Back on topic here as well. Btw funny noone mentioned that there's a bit of bad Religion sound in a couple of the songs on this album. Btw great album with a modern production albeit not sound as in the music.
