2012 saw a notable number of metal bands releasing excellent debut albums (Hail Spirit Noir's was the best, just throwing that out there), and 2013 thus far seems to be following suit. Anciients in particular, a four-piece out of Canada, seem to have been on a roll with pushing along their releases since their inception. The band only formed in 2010, released their Snakebeard EP in 2011, and now two years later here we are with their full length debut, Heart Of Oak. The band's sound overlaps between stoner metal, progressive metal, and a few extreme metal elements as well, but all come together on this debut to create one truly tasty pie.

Anciients employ an extremely varied and eclectic mix of styles, from blues rock to black metal, that combine together so effortlessly to form what is surely one of the best debut albums of 2013 so far. Heart Of Oak is as unique & ambitious as it is memorable, and will undoubtedly be a hit with any fan's of progressive, expansive music.

Pretty cool. Has an Enochian Theory feel to it. Definitely gonna give it a couple more spins.

Interesting take on that album. I honestly heard nothing on this album that reminded me of Enochian Theory...what made you strike the comparison?

Man I love the heavy metal tone of those guitars, just the sort I can't get enough of and I associate with bands like Cormorant at its most progressive and Slough Feg.

This album has been getting quite a bit of attention in the metal press lately. BECAUSE IT'S AWESOME. Don't be left behind: cave to peer pressure and listen now

So far this is the best debut of 2013 for me. They seem to take the best of everything to create something all their own, yet still are able to employ emotion. It's going to be fun to see how these guys evolve over time because they are truly talented .

Haha that's because no one in this thread accurately described the album at all.

Agreed, that's the first band I thought of after the first listen. Fun album.

I love the guitar work here, it gets a bit repetitive at times sadly.
The last song of the album is the winner.

Agreed with Apothecary's review, the guitars are a good sound. "Overthrone" beginning is a spot on cue from Mastodon, among other parts of the release, as already well said here. Therefore I will listen quite often.

Intereting combination of stoner doom heaviness and guitar intricasy. Glad to have checked this out. Needs more listens though.
