Not too many bands could throw a spoken-word, Kenny G sax muzak thing into the middle of a song called "In The Absence Ov Light" and not get laughed away into obscurity. Behemoth can get away with shit like that. They're just too cool to be dismissed. They sound cool and, with a theatrical sense that rivals well over half a Lady Gaga, they LOOK cool. I mean, I'm not gay, but I'd let Nergal and Orion double team me if they still want to.

What's my favorite scary movie? The Shining. With its subtle, psychological terror and slow-build that only Kubrick can pull off, it's a masterpiece. Sure, I get down with the gore-ridden creature features too. Everything from Evil Dead to Friday the 13th is cool in my book. Why is this relevant? Aliens. Okay, now you are more confused. Let me elaborate further. I think a lot of long-time fans come to a Behemoth album expecting a certain level of violence. Demigod, Thelema.6, Zos Kia Cultus; these classics are the "Aliens" of the Behemoth discography. Explosions, flame-throwers, disembowelment, "Game over man, game over!" I'm right with you, popcorn ready. The Satanist, on the other hand, is "Alien." Swarms of xenomorphs are replaced with a single, lurking threat in the shadows. The emphasis is on tension as each innocent is picked off one by one and dragged to their grim (and unseen) demise. While both styles are equally valid, I find the imagination to be a far darker place than anything directly fed to my senses.

Starting with Demigod, Behemoth's albums became more and more soulless. Faster, more brutal, better produced, but devoid of feelings. But no more. This one is spontaneous, wild, unhinged and unpredictable. It has more music than brutality, more feeling than calculation. A fantastic treat.

I get Joe's point, but I don't see much blind-love going on here really.
Leave that for bands that whatever they release, they get the highest ratings every time; but I think that in Behemoth's case the general consensus is that they've been releasing mediocre records lately and this was honestly surprise for a lot of us.

Well the last 3 albums before this all have scores way higher than they deserve, so from my perspective there's some serious impaired vision going on But if it makes everyone happier I retract my statement about people being blind.

Nope. Behemoth doesn't even rank among my favourite bands. I'm sensitive about double standards though

Not really double standards. Nearly 50% of the scores are 10s. Only 2 4s given out of the 200+ votes. From someone who finds this mediocre it's reasonable to assume I would think blind adoration is certainly part of the reason there are so many 10s. However no matter your position you couldn't argue there's hate going on here. Not with so few scores below 6.

You do have a point there - I suppose hate wasn't the right word (or it was, but only in the context of this specific thread based on the comments like you said). Either way, I'm actually a little disappointed this album didn't grab me the way it seems to have grabbed most of our users (and apparently the rest of the world). This is hardly even a step up from Evangelion.

What I meant is that I don't see hate towards this album as much as I don't see blind fanboyism for it for the reason I mentioned. This comes from my own experience talking to Behemoth enthusiast about their current state as a band, leaving out metal storm's album ratings which do not always reflect the overall opinion accurately.
I agree with you that those three albums are rated a bit higher that they should. Maybe Demigod is accurate since lots of Behemoth followers love this album, I personally disregard it's musical values a bit due to flawed production

I dunno, but to me with this album it feels like Behemoth has become one of those bands. Hype + prolific voters and commenters + massive acclaim surrounding what I regard as something not special my natural conclusion is to think something is a bit awry. Maybe not blind love, but some people getting caught up in the furore surrounding it. Granted, this thread isn't a Winterun level fanboy ejaculation, so I'll give the fans that at least

I'm liking this album the more I listen to it. It's left me with a much more satisfied feeling than Evangelion, which I personally felt was more run-of-the-mill Behemoth, with an occasional standout here and there, but that's just me. Glad I bought this one.

Hmm... I don't really care much for this album.

However, if this album does well enough to secure a permanent spot in the Top 200 before the competition for the "Top List of the Year" really kicks off, I'll be happy.

It would be nice to see something from AFTER 2010 finally getting on there, even if I don't personally believe in the choice myself. Personally, I find it to be a well deserved "Fuck You" to those vote-abusers who spam 1's on everything that "contests" their favourites.

Just great! The Satanist made it easily into my top 20 Albums of all time. I always loved Behemoth, but this Album is different. A lot of diversity in the compositions, from brutal Black Metal Assaults to slowly rumbling Death Metal Songs. The solos on this Album are also great. Just listen to the one in the song "The Satanist", or in Messe Noir. There is so much emotion in this album, that I have to bow down before the kings of Blackened Death Metal. This is one of my favorites this year for sure. Hail Behemoth, you set yourself a monument!

Wow, this sounds superb! I have never been into Behemoth before or liked them, but this actually changed my mind. A brilliant combination between brutality and well composed music, and just when you feel you've had enough of all the brutal stuffs, it smoothly breaks in with awesome melodies. Only thing I didn't like too much is the speaking, it sounds a little out of the mix (if you can put it that way) and it's quite performed without feelings. Feels a little unnatural. Else it's awesome. Heard the entire album once, looking forward to listen more to it. Might be a buy!

Even though I really like this album, I agree that it shouldn't be on the Top 200 of all time or anything (at least not yet). No new album should really be up there until it solidifies its place in mainstream consciousness, not just one week after it comes out.

Gonna get this to see what all the hype is about. Never heard any Behemoth before, so go into it with clean ears. Looking at pictures of them, they look like total freaks but I'll just focus on the music. Not into the whole satan stuff either, that's all pretty g&y, I reckon.

For some reason I really love the mixing of this album. Like, I really adore it, so warm and yet so gloomy.
The opening tracks opens the album real nicely. I hadn't listened the single but I recognized the name, so I expected something... well, something that I could expect, but it was something else. Slow, but not as boring as Lucifer, and then it turns into Apostasy-esque fast riffage. It was good.
And so is the rest of the album. I didn't really get into Evangelion, but for the few times I have now listened to this I think it's better than okay. Not a groundbreaking masterpiece, but if they have improved their live-performance from what they were last time I saw them, I'm sure to enjoy it. Might even purchase the album just for the moody atmosphere.

I think anyone with an actual sense of music would agree that this clearly is not the album of all years, but c'mon, the top 200 is already filled with overrated old-school heavy and Metallica, so with the hype behind this release it was to be expected to receive somewhat too warm welcome.
