08.10.2013 Bit of a mouthful that style description. Don't let it put you off though, Castevet's sound has always been a bitch to accurately describe but one thing's for sure: this is a top quality record. If their début wasn't already brilliant enough (which it was), Obsidian pushes the envelope even further and expands on their scorched-Earthen sound with a flawlessly organic progressive edge, with influences from Virus and Enslaved, if their sound is anything to go by.

New track called 'As Fathomed By Beggars And Victims' here.

So, I wasn't too far from the truth... Nowadays they sound quite progressive to my ears.
Pazdzioch - 19.09.2013 at 20:09
  ...and we have another song:

Rating: 9 Sounds absolutely phenomenal.
Pazdzioch - 08.10.2013 at 17:49
Great, the whole thing is streaming here.
!J.O.O.E.! - 08.10.2013 at 18:04
Rating: 9 Over half way through now. Really nice stuff indeed. More natural sounding and easier on the ear than the debut.
Nefarious - 08.10.2013 at 18:40
Giving this a spin now, enjoying it quite a bit so far.
!J.O.O.E.! - 08.10.2013 at 19:06
Rating: 9 Anyone else getting lots of Enslaved and a bit of Virus in this?

Rating: 8 Checked two songs and they were really cool. Will go for the whole thing tomorrow
@^ I feel virus and also, thanks for staff pick
Mr. Doctor - 08.10.2013 at 20:55
Listened to the whole things just a few hours ago. It was excellent.
R'Vannith - 10.10.2013 at 16:03
Rating: 9 Enslaved and Virus for sure, my only obstacle is the coarse vocals, hopefully I grow accustomed to them as the music is brilliant!
!J.O.O.E.! - 16.10.2013 at 22:30
Rating: 9 Such a great album. The production is absolutely tremendous, and as such everything comes through spot on.
Nefarious - 17.10.2013 at 02:37
Agreed. This album is fast becoming one of my favourites of the year.
InnerSelf - 09.12.2013 at 19:00
Rating: 9 Both the Enslaved and the Virus reference are spot on. One of this year's highlights.
Diverge - 19.12.2013 at 23:33
Rating: 9 Amazing. One of the releases I was sleeping on this year, and one of the year's best.
Chobo_jokeR - 24.12.2013 at 01:34
Rating: 9 I've been meaning to listen to this ever since I saw JOOE's staff pick. Finally got around to it and it did not disappoint. I was pulled in from the first note until the last. Fantastic album. More spins to come.
Unhealer - 24.12.2013 at 06:14
Rating: 8 5:59 to 6:40 on Cavernous. Just how awesome can awesome be?
Ilham - 28.05.2014 at 23:54
Rating: 7 As the movie buff that I am, I'm wondering if the name Castevet has something to do with Polanski's Rosemary's Baby. It's the name of "bad guy".
JayMo4 - 10.06.2014 at 23:57
Rating: 8 Definitely an album I wish more people would check out. Seems like it could be more popular if more knew it existed.

Definitely an album I wish more people would check out. Seems like it could be more popular if more knew it existed.

I'm surprised it has fewer than 30 votes here to be honest, upon its release it had been reviewed by Pitchfork and virtually every metal webzine and most of the reviews were extremely positive. I do think with more exposure to the right crowd that the overall rating would be a lot higher, but the black metal-hardcore hybrid isn't exactly the most accessible genre around.

Right, and that's how I heard about it. So I was kind of surprised more people didn't. Then again, I'm one of those obsessives that scours every best of the year list I can find in hopes to discover stuff I haven't heard yet.
