Eastern influences in rock-derived forms of music have come quite a long way since the days of George Harrison and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. With metal in its modern state, we definitely have plenty of bands that follow suit (Nile, Melechesh, and Rudra, to name a few). The problem I find with a lot of this Eastern-infused metal, however, is that the metal almost always seems to trump the Eastern elements, and being the Oriental f̶a̶n̶a̶t̶i̶c̶ ̶ nerd that I am, I find myself looking for bands that strike more of a 50/50 balance between the two. This year, I was lucky enough to get my wish, in the form of Cult Of Fire's sophomore release मृत्यु का तापसी (that's "Ascetic Meditation Of Death," for all you heathen bastards who have not yet mastered the holy Sanskrit).

Well this is quite good. The vocals and atmospherics remind me of Fen, the riffing and guitar tone occasionally makes me reminisce about the now-defunct Bleak, some of the leads make me think of The Meads of Asphodel, some of the harmonies put in mind Drudkh when they were good. Doesn't sound, on the whole, like any of these bands though.

None of those bands really excite me (except maybe Meads) since I thought the drummer of Lykathea Aflame has involved in it, I thought it would be somewhat a logical continuation of that band atleast at some level if not entirely. I would've preferred it. Anyway, still looking forward to this as it sounds as an interesting release.

I wouldn't go in expecting anything like Lykathea Aflame, certainly not a continuation. I suppose this is a rather uplifting black metal album, so it could be seen as similar in that regard, as Elvenefris was pretty damn positive and inspiring in a similar kind of way.

Some of the best BM this year. It first sounds quite "normal", but they do have some compositions that make them be a step ahead (specially the progression of the riffs and the easy blending with the keys). The costumes/stage stuff when they play live is also quite awesome, would love to see them.

Seeing them live would be sweet. I agree, the more typical black metal riffs are made better by the composition, which is great. There's something that just clicks with this album and I have to listen to all of it. I guess 48 minutes isn't that long but it still flies right by without any of the music feeling extraneous. There album before this, Triumvirát is also really damn good. it is more drawn out though.

One thing that made made fall instantly in love with this album is its very spiritual energy flowing throughout. You can feel the amount of effort being put into the production of the album and it's simply almost too good to be true. The mixture of evocative, sometimes atmospheric black metal and beautifully integrated eastern influences feels like the perfect musical combination. To be honest, the band's harsher side reminds me of both Borknagar and Burzum, whilst the eastern influences give the band freedom to roam in their own musical world. One of 2013's best extreme metal albums? For me, definitely.

Hmmmmm yes, after further listens it's definitely best black metal of 2013 that I heard.

Absolutely love track 4. That sad mellow melody with those dreamy chants, simply transcendental.
The subtile oriental references gives it a great vibe too.
