Within the realm of blackened doom, less really does seem to be more often times. Surprisingly limited in its scope, even after pioneers such as Dolorian and Katatonia burst onto the scene in the 90s, this style nonetheless has always felt like one where quality > quantity, and its small amount of practitioners always appear to be dealing out blows at a considerably high end of the spectrum. Relatively new on the scene are the Americans of Atriarch, and they're proving this idea true yet again with their third album, quite possibly the peak of their career.

Fucking excellent album, unfortunately hasn't been much in the blackened doom department for this year. Bast was good, but this is far more engaging, dynamic, and all around diverse in sound.

Listening to this now. It's a bit "slow" for my tastes and I am not a fan of "seance" vocals and structures. I like the heavy, crunchy riffs but all in all it's just not my deal.

I've been really enjoying this album lately. It's really dark and crushing at times. Didn't expect to like it, but somehow the songs keep me interested.

Oooooh, that's pretty sweet indeed
Also, if you're into them, Usnea just released their second album which is a really good follow up to the debut. Review coming soon.

Pretty decent. Not sure I'll listen to it again though. Didn't feel that "blackened" to me, bar the 40 seconds or so of black metal in Bereavement, and the slightly tortured nature nearer the end. The tone's a bit too ambiguous for my taste to really fully engage with this.

I honestly couldn't stand this band when I first heard them. Despite their somewhat unique sound, they just seemed pretty...bleh. Since then, they have grown on me tremendously, must have been all the Christian Death I listened to during that period. I take it the "blackened-ness" of their genre tag is, besides the shrill screaming and slight musical outbursts, that the atmosphere of the album has much more of a "ritualistic, blackened" feel, as opposed to a buzzsaw tremolo blackened feel.

I guess I'm used to my blackened doom being a bit more unpleasant than this

Same here, picked that album up on a whim and nothing in the blackened doom genre has topped it since, so far. Not to get too off-topic, but is Dictius Te Necare worth checking out?

On topic, I prefer Ritual of Passing to this one.

Yes, as is S.U.I.Z.I.D. but forget about everything after that. It's the first three albums where it's at with Bethlehem. And oh yeah especially stay clear of the re-recording of SUIZID with Kvarfoth on vocals. That one is truly atrocious.

Thanks, Marcel! I'll pick those up as soon as I am able. Never knew they did a re-recording of S.U.I.Z.I.D. with that twat from Shining. I hate that guy.

Strangely enough, I think that's what keeps drawing me back to this album. It's an interesting contrast of mood from blackened doom that's usually a lot more bleak and uncompromising, and it's that distinction that makes it a bit more interesting.

I really enjoyed this album upon first listen, but with every subesequent listen it becomes less and less interesting to the degree I find it to be average at best now.

Nothing great, but still pretty decent/good. Not sure if I'm going to revisit this one. The (sludge?) vocals didn't really do it for me.

Yepp, Ritual Of Passing is better. The ritualistic, slower sound on that is better. The uptempo doom riffs here becomes a bit misplaced.
