Chaos Ech?s are a prime example of why French metal has gained such a solid reputation for being very forward-thinking and experimentally inclined in the past decade. Typically labeled as death metal or death doom, this album doesn't stop there, with the band also adding in elements of black metal, drone, jazz, psychedelia, and more to their sound. At some points fast and incredibly heavy, at others meditative and transcendent, Transient is a bizarre, polymorphous beast that defies classification, and seems to be nothing more than a full embrace of the power of human ingenuity.

Go have a listen and ponder over the nature of improvisation.

Heard a lot of Swans in it and being a compulsive Swans listener (from the early no wave slabs to the huge drone/experimental/post-rock stuff) I thought I would appreciate it more than I did. The whole affair was a bit of a drag especially during the drone parts, but I promised myself to relisten to it since it was at least kinda peculiar, something like a 6.5 at the moment.

EDIT: rounded up to a 7, it's just way better than anything I rated 6 this year.

Really digging this, I love the crazy places it goes and how it gets there. Does anyone know of any other atmo improv bands/releases (ie. improv that isn't blues jam band)? We do a lot of improv in the band I'm in so I'm finding this super intriguing.

haha Marcel I know what improvise means. I meant to ask, what does one mean by improvised music? like, the band just got together and started playing and recorded whatever came out?

You really think so? I find that kind of surprising coming from you. Sounds like something Che would say, but not you.

Near perfect record this. Can only imagine what it would be like live, but them and Aluk Todolo would make an excellent touring duo, or even those two supporting Sunn O))) would work amazingly well.

I guess I am with the "average metaller" here. I "just don't understand".
Then again, I don't listen to too much Insomnium either.
