Sweden's In Mourning have earned being called a premier band in the field of progressive melodic death. Often stamped as Opeth's successors, even more so since Akerfeld and his revamped horde have veered off into some kind of progressive rock experience, the musicians from the city of Falun are set to unleash Afterglow on the metalsphere. And it is something quite special.

A funny coincidence that Daniel Liljekvist's new band is releasing their album on the exact same day as Katatonia lol.

That's what I've feared. Won't be able to hear this for another 2 days, but I hope it's somewhat good.

probably their weakest album

Hard to believe this when two of the three premiered songs pretty much match the top half of Monolith, but we'll see.

De gustibus, Monolith for me is one of their best albums, every song is insane, on the new album after listening it 10-15 times i can say the best song's are the one you already can hear on internet.

I enjoyed
02. The Grinning Mist
04. Below Rise To The Above
06. The Call To Orion
with all the groovy or progressive riffs and the characteristic In Mourning's atmosphere but the rest was not that good (except last track maybe) and actually no track made me go mad like I was in the first two albums. Indeed their weakest album but of course they are still a good band.

It lacks memorable melodies that older albums had. It moved more to the "technical" sphere and reminds more obscura like songwriting than "this is new opeth" as people used to call them after their debut. Yeah I would call it more technical and less melodeath, more creative in tempo and rytmic changes than in catchy riffs.

I actually find "Fire and Ocean" relatively catchy, In Mourning melodies don't get more memorable than that. "Below Rise to the Above" was also more enjoyable in context than when I heard it as a single. The occasional technical riffing isn't that different compared to Monolith for example, just not as inspired.

To be fair there were perhaps a handful of moments that I'd listen to again, but most of this record is very forgettable

Edit: that said...you're ratings are a cause for confusion. It seems you found the band's other works equally uninspired...which is...weird.

I wish there were half votes. I found The Weight Of Oceans a little less inspired than Monolith - respectively 5.5 and 6.5. I rounded both to 6. Small details after all. Monolith was fairly nice but nothing I would revisit very often tbh. TWoO... bit boring, but not that bad. I think they have the potential to finally strike me but it doesn't really happen, and they end up being just a good background listen.

Overall the Album is not bad at all but compared to the previous ones it is not at the same level , i think the main reason is that the album is more progressive than the others which gives the feeling of disorganized and forgettable riffs and melodies , however analyzing every musical element alone will tell how these guys are talented , specially Daniel Liljekvist on the Drums .. the guys is a fabulous drummer , anyway this kinda album is hard to digest from the first few times of listening , it needs more time to criticize and evaluate . now at least 3 out of the 7 tracks are extremely good , still the predecessors are better .

I really don't understand what's wrong with you all. This album is great, ok a less better than the first three ones but still excellent with the same spirit. You really don't need a lot to enjoy or dislike a band's path, they changed some little details in production and approach and they are a little less inspired but they're still here. For me, an album with 3 great songs is at less 8. However I respect your opinions

The artwork is striking That's the first thing I noticed about this album as it draws me in. The album itself does have a much more livelier side to it than the previous albums, but as above comments have stated, the production is not that good. The songwriting isn't that great either tbh, it's kind of bland with not too many stand out moments for me. Some of the lead guitarwork had improved in quality in some areas imo, but it would have been even better if it didn't have so many chuggish riffs.

I feel by this point they opted to pull away slightly from the Opeth influences like on previous albums, and began to put their own sound into it. For me this sounded like it was a step in the right direction for the band, but this particular album failed to please me.
