I remember a lesser group that was able to offer the sad, tranquil silence of nature in the form of metal music. After releasing four albums and a few EPs, Sólstafir grew up with Ótta, a great album that should be highlighted for the post-metal and progressive elements it features.

But after Ótta is the group's sixth album, Berdreyminn, an album that recognizes it is the type of music that needs to be heard more than once. Due to its conventional post-rock style, the sounds are ultimately played and used for nonmetal purposes; the sounds are used more for the creation of textures and space, not for riffs and solos. This time, though, the focus is slightly different, with a more progressive metal structure and more complexity. The use of original and progressive elements in Berdreyminn, adapted from classic rock of the '70s, reminds me of great bands like King Crimson; this is one of the strong points of the album. In addition to the type of music I have described, Berdreyminn is a very artistic and deep-seated album, and I think it's the most artistic album of Sólstafir to date.

Iceland has seen quite a number of bands churning out good albums lately. If that's anything to go by, then I really can't wait for this

On listening to it, I didn't find it to be as good as their previous album. Songs seemed less memorable to me, but it's not bad.

I was very pleased the hear that they brought back volume and decent production with this album, aka the Solstafir sound whose absence made Otta sound weak and empty. This one took a while to get into but once I finally got into it I couldn't think of a whole lot wrong with it. The overall sound was on par with their best albums and the feeling was about the same. This album lacked the amount of atmosphere that Otta had but I preferred that it was more straight forward.

Even though I enjoyed this album, it wasn't as striking or memorable as Masterpiece of Bitterness, Kold, or Svartir Sandar. Half of these songs feel like they are always building to a part that they never get to and even the songs that seem to build to where they should seem like they could still use more of a climax, some more inventive writing, or more emotional involvement. I think this is probably Solstafir's most samey album too. I still like it for what it is because it is another good addition to their discography, but the writing could be better. Then I'd probably love it.

Saw this at the shops and bought it, remembering I had their last one and thought it was alright. Played it and realized I'd gotten them mixed up with Empyrium. Whoops.

I listened last four albums. I love this one. This is a huge improvement after the other three. More memorable songs are here and I often return to listen again.

Otta was much better

Otta especially had a much better dynamic mastering. Berdreyminn is super flat and loud, which does not suit Solstafir's music at all. Pretty big disappointment, as Ottà is a 10/10 for me.
