When your debut is one of the best metal records ever released, also defining an entire genre, it takes a lot of effort to live up to it through the rest of your career. Morbid Angel have not recorded a death metal album in the last 14 years; they have not recorded a great death metal album in the last 24 years. Kingdoms Disdained is a death metal record through and through. Keep reading to find out if it is great or not.

I find myself in a somewhat weird position. Even though I am a long-time fan of Morbid Angel, I always found the incredible David Vincent to be incredibly cringy. Anything the man does on and off the stage causes an imaginary nail to grind against every single one of my bones. He is an amazing vocalist and MA owes a huge part of their success to his whole persona, but I do think that you can blame many of their mishaps on him, too. Weird elitist interviews, silly fights over politics with other bands while on tour, the alleged gifting of Mein Kampf to the immortal Lemmy (who in turn allegedly smashed him over the head with it) are just a few examples of what I mean. In retrospect I do feel that he did more harm than good and Trey would have always been better off without him in the band.

Really looking forward to this. Also greatly missing Pete Sandoval behind the kit but lets hope for good things here.

Lovely artwork as for the rest, seems to me that Morbid Angel died about 15 years ago, am I getting confused ?

It's probably going to be rubbish, as much as that pains me to say.......After 'Illud Divinum', it's impossible for me to get stoked over any future Morbid Angel releases.

Also, this is going to be yet another album without Pete on the drums. Even though they're one of my all time favourites, They should call it quits.

This feels like Formulas V2 -Pete. 1st track was too simplistic and the title is oddly grindcore-related for them...
Hope for the best... Thankfully that massive TOOL Dave is out of the band!

The new drummer is a fucking beast and he is one of the positive things about this album.

So far the songwriting is very repetitive, and it's not even that great. It sounds kinda average and the guitar production is very lacking. Also the drummer tries really hard to sound like Pete, I think. (I'm halfway through this)

Edit: Yeah, overall nothing impressive here aside that it isnt like Illud lol

I had high hopes, but not too high ones after their previous release. The opening track seemed incomplete and just simply thrown there because it was fast and it might make someone believe that Morbid Angel is back at it again with the death metal. Then comes D.E.A.D. which is...I don't even know. A garage band song for jamming together. The whole song seems to fall apart, there is zero cohesion at all. The first interesting moment was the 3rd song where I got reminded of the Covenant era of Morbid Angel. Even this song seems to be incomplete. Seeing the high rating maybe I am the one in the wrong, but this album didn't convince me at all. The second somewhat memorable moment is the 7th song (The Pillars Crumbling), where Scott's drumming is stellar, almost drum soloish at some moments during the song. In fact, for me Scott's drumming is the only thing saving this album from total failure. All in all, they tried to sound like Altars Of Madness with some Covenant influence here and there, but this is a very weak return from a legend like Trey who had 14 years (yup, that's when Heretic was released) if we don't count Illidum or whatever is that Morbid Lulu called, to write a good album.

Okay it is better than Illud, but that isn't hard. This new one is just averageness and mediocrity all over. And the mix is really bad.

The music is not bad. Not AMAZING, but not awful either. But good god damn is the mix awful. Takes a decent album and pretty much ruins it.

Boring run-o-the-mill death metal with some of the worst production I've heard in awhile. It's bad.

I would like to retract the statement which I made earlier in this thread. I actually like the new album. The mix is somewhat difficult to stomach, many parts of it I guess would take some getting used to, but fuck, after Illud, this is refreshing in comparison. I like the record, though I wouldn't call it 'amazing'. I wouldn't call it their best, I would say that out of all the records they did with Tucker on the vocals, Gateways is the one to beat (it's the album which first turned me on to the band when I was 12 years old).

.......I love the lyrics for 'Declaring New Law' (track 9).

I disagree, Formulas is to Gateways what Covenant is to Domination. Formulas captures more of what I love about Morbid Angel. It better encapsulates the unorthodox raw underground sound than the polished gems that are Gateways and Domination.

Anything would sound good after the deplorable horse-shit that was Illud. It's not a great album but it is a return to some sort of form. I have to admit that I do love a few tracks (Piles of Little Arms, The Righteous Voice and Architect and Iconoclast) but I know that they won't survive in the playlist for any longer than a couple of weeks

P.S. 1 - At least they got rid of the massive ass-hat tool that is Dave Vincent. No matter how good his vocals are, he is really cringy both on and off stage.
P.S. 2 - I do miss Pete but the new guy has done a great job.

Half of Formulas are just interludes though

Nice album. I like the drum. I didn't think twice to buy it because it is Morbid Angel,. You can hear clearly that the good old Death Metal no longer exist. The flair and rhythm are missing.

1st Morbid Angel album that I've listened to.
I found the opening track was very promising & was hoping it would carry throughout the album. Unfortunately not the case. Righteous & Architect both had some moments, but the rest felt like the same song on repeat.
