CyHra brings Peter Iwers and Jesper Strömblad of In Flames together with erstwhile Amaranthe vocalist Jake E, backed by drummer Alex Landenburg (of many projects, including Mekong Delta) and guitarist Euge Valovirta (formerly of Shining). That's an impressive array of credits. Some might call this a supergroup? perhaps before they've listened to it.

Jesper quit In Flames citing musical differences. Soon he formed The Resistance, a Death Metal band, so I assumed his problem with In Flames was the music becoming more accessible. He even made fun of Siren Charms when it was released. So when he said he was working on new music for a band with Peter Iwers, I expected he would finally write Melodic Death Metal again, but when he announced Amaranthe's former vocalist, Jake E, as their singer, I lost my hopes. And rightfully so, as they released this album, which is as commercial - if not more - than In Flames recent material. Though this is not a problem per se - and I gave them the benefit of the doubt, the music here lacks any real substance. The songs are built around Jake's vocals, following simple structures - the old verse-chorus-verse-chorus formula - with recycled mid-era In Flames' riffs and some Trance elements here and there.

Their old stuff is better.

Haters are gonna hate because hating is hip. Meh, I dunno. I enjoyed the album. Didn't skip a single track on my first listen. Frankly, it's exactly as I expected. With Jake on vocals and Jesper on guitar, unless people have no idea who these two are (including Peter on bass) when they go to listen to it, it's kinda obvious what you're getting into, and I enjoyed it.

Hearing the intro to the opening track Karma made me think "There's the Jesper I miss!" It was one of those moments when you realize how you can associate a tune with a musician. That is quintessential Jesper.

It's basically Jake's band. Anyone expecting any significant In Flames influence just didn't care to read the story. Sounds as expected, early Amaranthe minus the harsh vocals and Elize. The instrumental is exactly that, with mild IF reference. Lots of great vocal tunes here, Jake really delivered.

People have negative feelings about this album, because mostly they expect it to be "what would In Flames sound like if Pete and Jasper never quit." This has nothing to do with In Flames really, not even remotely, it is some kind of melodic metal, a lot of influence from power and hard rock. I assume it is closer to "what the Amaranthe would sound like if Jake had it's say."
That being said, I really enjoyed it, yes you could call it commercial, but it is still way better hard rock / melodic metal album than last couple of In Flames albums or the last Amaranthe.
