It's albums like Discouraged Ones, Katatonia's third full-length recording, that have me questioning the act of writing about music. There are just no words that could give complete justice to an album like this. No amount of persuasive adjectives or descriptive analysis could ever truly define what Katatonia's music has become and the effect it has on me. In any case, the band has taken the minimalist approach first showcased on their previous album, Brave Murder Day, even further into the realms of hypnotic repetition.

Rating: 9 I didn't know what to expect when seeing that this album had considerably shorter songs that their first two albums, but once i listened to 'discouraged ones' i knew that katatonia were still the brilliant katatonia,no matter how long their songs are. awesome album, but it can get slightly tedious at times.

Rating: 7 Very depressing music. I like it though, this is a good record.

Rating: 8 I just bought this album yesterday, and it is probably one of the best albums i've heard from this amazing band (Up there with Viva Emptiness, and Great Cold Distance). It truly is one of the most emotionally powerful albums I have heard from the band (that's saying a lot). Many of the vocal passages are among the most haunting I have ever heard from Jonas Renkse and the songs are hypnotic. Also the drum sound has very much improved over the very clicky (IMO) drum sound of Brave Murder Day.
