They're baaaaaaaaack! Put on your battle armor Ahab and Esoteric, because funeral doom titans Evoken have returned and they're ready for war with yet another excellent contribution to the overlooked style from which they come. Apparently Atra Mors is the 100th album to be released on Profound Lore Records, and a fantastic celebration of such an event it is indeed.

Rating: 10 There are a lot of boring doom bands (mainly the funeral, drone, or stoner variety), but Evoken is surely NOT boring.

Are you talking about Evoken? Evil or scary is the last thing I'd call them.

Rating: 8 While I have known about Evoken for quite some time, it was not until just recently that I took the time to actually listen to their music properly. This is something that I definitively do not regret as all of the albums I have checked out so far have been really great and Atra Mors is no exception. Come to think of it, it is probably my favorite of the bunch.

One of the main strenghts of this album in my opinion is the more dynamic sound overall comapred to previous offerings. The slightly more prevalent keyboard and cello as well as the interludes are a welcomed touch amidst the immense wall of suffering and despair. As a whole, this creates a truly dense and crushing atmosphere that I simply can't get enough of.

Must say I'm still not completely sold on this band or album. They're the definition of consistency, and I certainly appreciate how this album is both solid and dynamic. But compared to some of the other extreme doom albums this year (Faal, Profetus and Monolithe especially) there's that certain something missing. A feeling, an atmosphere, not sure what it is.

Rating: 10 Absolutely love this album, but its a shame, I really hate the production. It sounds much worse than their previous albums. It's real boomy, and unnatural sounding, especially in the drums. It actually ruins the flow of the album for me alot of the time. But other than that, the music is fantastic

I think it's missing the creativness that those other have. This feel kinda like cookie cutter funeral doom.

It's still fantastic though, even in its lack of originality.

This amazing sound and dark atmosphere is amazing, amazing band. I hope else's and albums are stored in this style. Great atmosphere, great audio, with the only ESOTERIC can compete this album

That was some painful Google-translated reading I must say.

  Painful, yet hilarious.
NocturnalStalker - 04.06.2013 at 18:04
Rating: 9 Brutally wonderful and mournfully inspiring album, it I may say so. Evoken, as always, play a very well-balanced kind of funeral doom/death metal and do it quite skillfully too. One a few bands in this sub-genre manage to get my attention and Evoken is surely one of them.
MELANCOHOLIC - 14.09.2013 at 18:09
Rating: 7 This is their worst effort to date. it gets dull and boring at times. I never get scary about any album i listen to, even i must say there is no music that can change my mood. I can listen to funeral doom and being in a good mood and music dont make me feel miserable or sad. There must be something wrong with me :/
