Ten long years after Antichrist, the mighty Akercocke are back. This time they have taken off their suits and the band's renaissance has occurred without sacrificing any goats. Female breasts are also absent and there is no sign of Lucifer worship. But fear not, for their admirable inability to deliver a less-than-extraordinary record is intact.

The thing that ruins this album is the vocals. It's a good album musically, but the vocals are just so poorly executed.

Indeed, I don't mind them most of the time, but there are moments when they kill all the momentum. Shame.

This didn't turn out as bad as I feared after the single, but the whole thing sounds like a pre-production album. Weak sound, some flat and disjointed songwriting and a lot of very cringey vocals. Another couple of months in the oven and this might have been a really tight extreme prog album.

Excellent songwriting brought down by baffling vocals. "First to Leave the Funeral" makes me feel uncomfortable with second-hand embarrassment. This could have been an easy 9, possibly even a 10, if not for having to grind through what I guess we'll call "singing" for 50+ minutes. Maybe he was sick during recording? The growls are on point as usual but it's as if he forgot how to sing in key when doing cleans.

Damn the vocals truly sound like horseshit. But maybe I can get used to them.

I don't even want to try. Maybe someone with music editing software can upload an instrumental version. Until then, this is going in the pile of things I probably won't ever listen to again.
