So great, but at the same time, so similar to Vast Oceans...

With a cover like that, I can't help but be optimistic.

Haven't checked these guys out before, liking what I hear so far, especially the vocalist!

Doom is not meant to sound this fluffy. At least Candlemass could/can make you feel distraught. That's the difference between a band who can play with atmosphere and a band who can't. Why these guys get so much hype is beyond me - it's just slightly progressive power metal with "sorrowful" vocals.

well... I have no problem with them sounding erm... fluffy as you put it, but the song writing is just not as engaging as their last effort. Feeling a bit let down at the moment, but I'll get back to it in a week's time or so and see if my opinion change

I do agree that they don't really sound like a Doom band, but I think it sounds great regardless of whether it is 'fluffy' or not and obviously they're no comparison to Candlemass, very different musically.
The biggest problem with the album is length I think, that may be another reason why it doesn't sound like Doom, it doesn't have the same build-up of atmosphere as your typical Doom album, its just too quick.

I feel let down, even after three plays this album just doesn't do it for me. That being said, the last two albums still are really close to my heart.

Still doesn't do it for me either. I think it has to do with the fact this one was written in a very short period of time when you compare it to the previous three albums. The new one sounds like a rush job to me.

Great album, not as good as 'Vast Oceans Lachrymose', and yes, a bit too short, but definitely once more, great stuff from this guys. Once again they prove they really know how to create a epic and beautiful music.

I don't get this too short thing people are complaining about. ALL of their albums clock in under 45 minutes.
|
|
|
|
|

Whether or not people wanted their other albums to last longer is irrelevant, people just feel that this could have been better had they given themselves more time to expand on their ideas in each song.
To me it doesn't matter. 45 minutes was hard enough to get through, I wouldn't want to go through any more than that.

That wouldn't have made it better. What would have made it better is if they ahd taken their usual 5 to 6 years to complete this album. Then Tom would have taken the time to finetune it all. The first versions of the songs o VoL are quite different to what later on appeared on the release. And here with this one the first and final versions are quite the same.

5-6 years?! That's way too much for every single album imo o___O Well if it took so long to make Vast and I thought it was fucking meh at best then I'm so not bothering with this band at all.

Tbh the album is growing on me.
And I have been set straight regarding my comment about it being rushed.
"These songs were all meant for "VOL" and only set aside because "The Furthest Shore" grew so massive." is what Tom told me.
So, I stand corrected in that respect.

My feelings are exactly the same. I don't mean to say their music is bad but I just can't get into it...

I have to say that really this band has impressed me, specially they get a really awesome sound. But still i can't get into it entirely, maybe because the parts of the album that are more slow or i really can not with that melodies, i prefer the kind of songs like "Hour Of Reprisal" (this is outstanding) or "Destroyer Of Solace", the rest of the album is too slow for me, i would like more variety in this sense between the tracks (a little more of speed, no more), although for example still i like the track 3 "Obsessions Now Effigies" despite its slowness, at least the melody is still good. The rest is too slow and the melodies get bored me. The same pass me with the previous album "Vast Oceans Lachrymose", there are songs like "To Wander The Void" (specially this) or "Living sepulchre" that are incredible and epic, but the rest of the album is too bored in their melodies or too slow. By the way the singer is very good, but seems he starts to participate from the album "Vast Oceans Lachrymose".

I seriously doubt the human ear could detect differences that high. I personally still think people that can tell the difference above 320 are liars, or tragically kidding themselves. I've always been happy with 160 myself.

At the end, this people have got me, they have gotten great feeling and a fantastic atmosphere on this album. The ballad "Unplenitude" is very good, beautiful, where the singer proves his great value. And by the way, the production is brutal .
By the way, the order of the songs in the booklet (i love it, beautiful art) is wrong:
04. To Grieve Forever
05. Saturn And Sacrifice
06. Unplenitude

"Beautifully crafted,"
"Epic metal of the highest order!"

I'm personally happier with 192, though for a lot of releases 320 is just the right thing. Since I listen to most of my albums when I rip them to my cellphone memory card, and sound is already really muffled on my headphones, I prefer the HQ.

I really gave a honest chance to this album as I did to all albums from the power metal nominees of 2012.
It's too calm... to relaxing... it just isn't my cup of tea. The first time I listen to this I was already in the 5th track but I was wondering if it was still the first song... I just couldn't distinguish the songs, so similiar to each other.
The melodies are not bad but the voice sometimes remind me of Moby and I don't like Moby...
Maybe I'll try it again when I'm looking for something more relaxing but right now it just didn't cut it.
