What types of art forms can keep your attention for over two hours? A book, perhaps, or a movie? In the case of music, however, albums that do so tend to be pretty damn rare. Creating an album that long that doesn't appear to lag, and that has a good diversity of sound, is a tricky beast to slay. So, is Shards Of Silver Fade, the new 142 minute album from Australia's Midnight Odyssey worth it? Let's find out.

This album was deleted and re-added, wonder why that is. Whether the album went past the scheduled release of March and so did it get auto deleted from the MS db?

Most likely because it didn't have an official release date.

Yea, you can't put an album up with 'sometime soonish (hopefully)' as its release date

^That kinda worries, hope this is dark enough for me.

Listening to the Firmament demo now, will check this after listening to their debut once.

Nothing to worry about, It might be more melodic than before but it's still damn near perfect ambient black. Still haven't decided if it's better than its predecessor.

Yeah the black metal is less prevalent here and Dis screeches have taken a back seat a bit more but I'm not complaining. Some bits have a darkwave vibe feel as well.

Perfect to kick back on a cold dark rainy night.

I'm finding myself to have a strange like/dislike attitude towards this album. On the one hand, as people have said, the black metal is less prevalent here. So sometimes when I listen I find myself asking "Where is the motherfucking BEEF, Dis?" and wishing that it'd get a little heavier/more aggressive, and yield more of a balance between that and the atmospheric elements. But at the same time it's really cool to see this guy exploring the ambient side of things a lot more, and in that regard this album can be really beautiful, relaxing, and mesmerizing at a lot of points throughout.

As far as 2 hour + black metal albums go, though... Blood Geometry is still where it's at, y'all

This album is mind blowing in certain parts, but the whole thing is way too long.

Totally agreed. For me the debut is way better than this one. Although I just listened to this twice, it somehow fails to grab me like the debut did. The album is way too long for it's own good too. It's good, but I guess I expected something amazing. I could very well change my opinion, though.

So I got some way into this, and there are some nice moments, but it's like eating a box of sugar glazed donuts for 2 hours and 20 minutes. It's nice at first but gets sickly after a short while. I can't imagine doing the whole thing in one go. I'd probably feel like I contracted diabetes.

That being said it does sound like 80s synthpop funnelled through a black metal filter at many points, which is interesting to say the least.

That's why these fucking Midnight Odyssey albums are way too long. Sweet Jesu, kill your darlings already. Any album over 45 minutes needs to get its shit together, seriously contemplate life, the universe, and everything and give a valid excuse to justify its length before even THINKING about going on for longer than an hour. These Midnight Odyssey albums are some of the worst examples of albums that do not. 2 hours and 20 minutes? Are you joking? Not even Esoteric could get away with that and I love Paragon Of Dissonance so much I fuck it.

I get the impression you've been bottling that up for a while =P

I agree though. Long albums seem to be en vogue a bit, probably because some people will instantly lap it up like it automatically makes something good or better. I can't really think of any album, no matter how much I loved it, that would really justify such lengths. Maybe a few handful at best but they would have to be constructed in a very specific way. Not "we're so awesome doing the same thing that we can do it for ages and get away with it, because we're awesome" mentality of stuff like this. I'm really not into long albums any more.

What gave me away?

But yeah, I agree that those lengthy albums need to be constructed in a specific way. A sum greater than its parts if you will. And there are an incredible few amount of albums that pull such a thing off successfully.

Nice way to put in words.

I got back from office and listened to this.

Start was amazing with plodding riffs and very thick layer of bass crashing through the music new Midnight Odyssey music. But, it just gets repetitive. No doubt the work they put up is amazing but I felt like Joe put up in post above.

Still 7.5 to 8 work.

If you thought Midnight Odyssey was too long, try Senmuth - ▲, that lasts about 5/6 hours.

Regardless of the genre(s) this can be classified as, this is hands down one of the best albums that I've ever listened to. Yes, it's long, but artistry should have no constraints. Look to the skies on a cool night, play this album, and next thing you know you're flying through space. Mr. Parker/Pater has created a citadel of sound here, something that takes you to another world and leaves you asking for more.
