We're pretty used to calling music "otherworldly" and usually in a good way. For Liturgy, it was such a twisted form of black metal whose glitches, blaring horns, convoluted lore and philosophy from Hunt-Hendrix's world made it feel quite incomprehensible for our world. 93696 is quite a colossus that encapsulates all that.

Early this January, I published an 8.6 review of Liturgy's November 2019 album H.A.Q.Q.. This was about three years after I saddled 2015's The Ark Work with one of the most vitriolic reviews I've ever written, so I thought that that H.A.Q.Q. review was going to be the biggest shock I received in 2020.

I do not possess one split atom's worth of regard for Hunter Hunt-Hendrix's "uniquely [M]arxist and psychoanalytic vision of God," nor do I care to dissect the flowchart of esoteric gibberish that somebody out there thinks qualifies for an album cover. But glitched-out spasmodic post-black metal with occasional harp and brighter tones than the Teletubbies' wardrobe? I'm? in? I guess?
