Biography

Only a handful of bands have the courage to drill as deep in megalomania and plain lunacy as Chaosweaver did on its colossal debut Puppetmaster of Pandemonium. The band's dark, grandiose and distinctively unique sound has been described as an unusual blend of gloomy metal, cinematic landscapes and the dramatics of classical music.

It took five months of mind-bogglingly hard work to forge the piece of dark art together in renowned Studio Perkele (Deathchain, Ajattara, Discard). The final result ended up sounding like a mob of lunatics had kidnapped a symphonic orchestra and squeezed the most disturbed and harsh notes out from it. Even the band members themselves were surprised by the outcome.

"After working on this for so long, the feeling is unreal", sighs the exhausted but happy drummer-producer Jack Tyger after the toil. "We managed to achieve such a hypnotic creation that one cannot but wonder. Albums as immense and freakish but mysteriously catchy as this don't come along every day. And that's a promise."

The seven-head assembly, which was formed in 2004, draws its influences from old horror movies, historic-mythical literature and illustrious composers such as Jean Sibelius, Carl Orff and Richard Wagner. After two internationally praised demos, the band signed to a fresh Finnish label Shadow World Records.

Puppetmaster of Pandemonium's lyrical themes stretch from World War II bombers of Flaming Rain to the ancient Chaos Gods of White Noise, from vampyric agony of Locked in a Coffin to old Finnish mythology and folklore of Son of the Moon. The musical side widens the concept even further beyond the boundaries of normality. Chaosweaver yanks the strings of pandemonium to the direction it wants, as the ominous name of the album shamelessly declares.

To enrich the already affluent soundscape, the album features an interesting list of high-profile guests: Profane Omen's and Enemy of the Sun's multi-talented singer Jules Näveri, ex-Deathchain-growler Rotten, Swallow the Sun's keyboard wizard Aleksi Munter and Moonsorrow's singer-bassist Ville Sorvali.

THE EVOLUTION OF CHAOS

2004: The Birth of Tragedy

Kole (ex-guitars and ex-vocals), a veteran of the Finnish scene, had long since laid aside his axe, but was driven to pick it up once again. He and his colleague Hursti started playing Iron Maiden covers at the basement of their working place.

Little by little new riffs started accumulating, and Max, and old friend of Kole's was asked to join. The idea of Chaosweaver, a keyboard-driven, up-to-neck orchestrated extreme metal band was born. Max's weapon of choice were the keys. Since the band practices were held infrequently, unfortunately only a few riffs survived more than a couple rehearsals.

2005: Procreation of the Chaotic Generation

The threesome got tired of playing without a drummer, so they were forced to find one. Jake (ex-drums) was added to the ranks. Shortly after Ezzymania 2000 (guitar) joined, and Max decided to change from keyboards to bass.

At this time Kole wanted to call the band From Depths..., but the others weren't too happy about the abstract and childish name, so everyone made up a list of new ones, and decided to vote on it. At the day of christening, there were about 20 options from which to choose from. Kole, Max, Jake and Ezzymania 2000 narrowed it down to two: Fearweaver and Chaosweaver. The latter was chosen - with a little help from an old school coin toss competition. The chosen name was later to set the musical and lyrical guidelines of the band.

New riffs kept coming, but the arrangements and song structures seemed to go nowhere, and the right chemistry was not found. Changes were had to be made.

Jake was set loose, and several drummers came and went before settling with Janne Hakuli. Janne had his own rehearsal place, so the whole band moved from Kole's place of work to another basement in Herttoniemi, Helsinki. The songs Angel and Flaming Rain were composed, and the band started practicing more.

2006: Audiovisual Manifestation in the Sinister Nation

The band had two songs more or less ready for recording, but before entering the studio, a few more line-up changes occurred. Ezzymania 2000 (guitar) left the assembly, and Thab Picard (keys) joined. A few guitarists and vocalist came and went, but the band recorded their first demo, critically acclaimed Weaving the Chaos, with a line-up consisting only of four members (excluding Ezzymania, who returned to record a killer solo on Angel): Kole on vocals and guitar, Max on bass and backing vocals, Thab on keys and Janne on drums.

A documentary film about making of the demo was also shot. This rarely seen piece of motion picture history, The First Two by an independent film maker Timo Könönen, clocks at about 60 minutes and shows the guys in recording action as well as trying to act smart on interviews - not to mention Max getting totally blastered on Jaloviina.

The two song demo featuring Angel and Flaming Rain was recorded and mixed in two days by Jack Tyger of Studio Perkele. Jack, a brilliant drummer, was surprised about the classy outcome. Since Janne had a lot of trouble playing on time in the studio and at the rehearsals, Jack was asked to join the group full-time.

Weaving the Chaos gained a plethora of positive feedback, and the band was boosted into a small underground cult fame. Both demo songs received wide international airplay, and the band was contacted by a few record labels, but it didn't lead to serious record deal discussions, which was at this point nothing but positive.
