Celestial Season - Biography

Biography

Formed in 1991 with Stefan Ruiters on vocals, Robert Ruiters and Jeroen Haverkamp on guitars, Lucas van Slegtenhorst on bass and Jason Kohnen on drums, the bandwent on to have a ten year career with two highly distinctive periods. Starting as a dark doom metal band, inspired by the british scene, the band evolved to a more rock based stoner style.

The band's first album, Forever Scarlet Passion, comes across as a competant but unadventurous attempt. This was followed by the more inspired Solar Lovers, with its beautiful, albeit depressing, string arrangements. Solar Lovers is also the first recording to introduce some of the future stoner elements into the band. Soon after, Stefan Ruiters left the band and was replaced on vocals by Cyril Crutz who participated on the band's 1995 EP Sonic Orb. The band seemingly abandoned its doomed roots to completely turn to the stoner rock inspired by USA artists such as Masters Of Reality, Fu Manchu and, of course, Kyuss. By the time they recorded their new album, only Kohnen remainded from the original line-up. In 1997, they released Orange, an album that does justice the american stoner scene.

After Orange, Kohnen left the band which had become something completely new, they hired a new bassist and recorded another three totally stoner orientated records, Chrome, Lunchbox Dialogues and the Songs From The Second Floor EP released the same year the band decided to split, 2001. The decision to call it a day came as the band believed they had "fulfilled" their musical quest.
