Biography

A three piece oldschool 80's thrash metal/punk trio from NYC consisted of founder and lead guitarist and vocals, Kenny Lienhardt, original bassist Jimmy Strain who also sang lead vocals, and Cathy Burke on drums and percussion. ~Black Virgin~ whose songs and lyrics consisted and reflected political, comedic, social and personal issues fueled the creativity for a rebellious/anthem-like moshing melody of a metal/punk mixture. Formed around 1979-80, BV released their first early demo which consisted of the songs "Panick Stricken" and "Burn in Fire" then followed up with a second demo named "Feel the Steel". That demo consisted of two songs "Feel the Steel" and "44 Killer.

Soon after, Jim left the trio to form his own band, BV then released another single called "Turn it to the Right" with Sean Vasquez on bass who was in the band a short while. Those songs never made it to an LP unfortunately and then Sean left the group and, Joe joined in 1984 and 6 months later, after a grueling rehearsal schedule ~Black Virgin~ were off to Germany to record their first LP Most likely to Exceed which was released in Europe only, under the label Bellaphon Records with follow up tours to Koln, Russelshiem, Frankfurt, Mainburg, Hamburg, Berlin, Iserlohn and Belgium just to name a few. Cheers and Skol, to all our friends and fellow european headbangers, who let us play, drink, sleep and do all those other disgusting things we did while there, we love ya and had a blast!!.lol...Black Virgin were also on a compilation by Mutha Records in 1988 named "Bands only a Mutha could Love Volume 1" and released a couple of later demo's called Sledgehammer Justice Engineered by Steve Rosenthal from The Magic Shop studios in 1990 and Aural Sects For The Blind, and self-recorded at Stellar Media NYC in

1992. BV rehearsed at the famed "Music Building" on 8th ave. at 38th street on the 5th floor, which was their home for about 8-10 yrs. If anyone remembers, give us a shout out, be great to hear from you! After Joe's 9 year hiatus he departed the band in 93' which brought in yet another bassist, Rob Graham formerly of Primal Scream who had played briefly with the band. BV spread terror and fear around manhattan and surrounding boroughs in such clubs like Lamours in Brooklyn, The 308 Bar, Trax NYC, Febuary's in Elmont LI, Sanctuary's, The Spiral, Lizmar Lounge, The Underground and other sleazy spots around the city. Since the bands split, they have gone to persue life/love and other musical projects. Tho this "myspace shrine" is all that is left along with their music and spirit...There's always a possibility we could record and tour again. Ya just neva know. There were so many gigs, and countless good times, if we could do it all over again we would in a heartbeat!!...All ex members are musically active in other ventures as well, from blues to classical to management, engineering sound or teaching, you name it we're probably doing it.

Black Virgin also showed much support and respect to most underground and unsigned bands from around the world. If you were metal/punk and not an asshole, then most likely we'd of played a gig together..haha. Nobody is a bigger supporter than ourselves and our fans..We love this business for us NOT big money record companies who try to change an artist to benefit their own wallets...Rock on' Be Strong and "Be Proud to Be Loud..! You can find Kenny working laborously at the Bowery Ballroom he is one of the head soundmen there, stop in and say hello if you can catch him! Another interesting link about the band can be found here and the Corroseum's interview with our onetime producer, Ingo Nowotny about our LP. The name Black Virgin was inspired by the following false gospel of the stars, Cult of the Black Virgin we don't worship satan or sacrafice cute furry creatures, unless with potatoes and gravy, but many humans were affected by our onslaught!...
